For what it's worth, it's going to be aggrivating to try and reassemble that steering box-  use some grease to hold the balls in place while you try to get it back together.

Also, when and if you upgrade to crossover steering, that skidplate will be in the way of the steering stabilizer if you run it on the draglink to keep it up out of the rocks.  I've run without mine for years with no ill effects.

Thats a good looking runner, and you're off to a great start!

pull that piston out of the box.  there should be a cap on the back of it that is staked.  unstake it and twist the cap off.  then twist the worm gear back in the piston.  then put the ball bearings back in through the back cap.  ou will have to twist the worm gear in the piston back and forth a lot to get theb alls to settle right.  that is how both yota4life and i did ours.  for the input part where you seal is leaking.  there is a keyed washer that you need to twist counter clockways.  it will put apart and you will see a bearing, a rubber o ring seal, a nylon bushing seal, and a lip seal.  make sure you put it back together the way it comes out.

Jud

Hey man if you need a stock 85 box that doesnt leak I have one I took off when I did my crossover steering. I will let it go cheap if your willing to pay for shipping?

Thanks guys for the help. I have to decided to rebuild the box, so i am going to call a guy and see what it will cost. Once this is done i am going to get the elockers wired up and a rollcage put in so i can go wheeling.

Thanks Jud for the offer.

I wouldn't put any money into that stock PS box.  I'm pretty sure somebody in CO has an old PS box in Denver they would give to you.  I've got one but it's in Pueblo, 1.5 hours south of you.  I would save my money and put it towards high steer and an IFS PS box.

you might want to paint that rust repair on your fender. most primers aren't sealers so moisture will continue to move through and continue eating away, you'll also notice the rust stains seeping through the gray primer after awhile.

Nice truck

Sorry guys havnt been able to work on the truck lately. My girl friend broke her back on Friday, she fell through the ceiling at her high school, it is a long story. I spent all weekend and most of this week at the hospital by her side, she went into surgery on saturday at 230pm and got out at 7pm. She had two bars put in her back, 4 of her vertibre shattered. The good news is she can walk and is not paralized. I have been able to spend more time with her though so that is a plus. Now that she is home, it will be worked on, just not as much as before, at least till she heals.

Do not pay that much to have that box rebuilt.  There are plenty of people that have converted to the IFS box for high steer that have these old PS boxes just laying around.

Hey guys, sorry its been awile, been busy with school and my job, at GO Honda, im a lube tech, i have the new steering box in, and spray painted my wheels. I took the truck out today after work and did some muddin in a field near my school. It rained abit today so there was some mud. Sorry no action pics because i went alone, but here are some after pics.

I was on my way home and saw a tacome lifted on 33s and he was coming the other direction on the road, he was stopped, and we both looked at each other and nodded, it was so cool!!

OH annd my truck has a very ruff ride, its way more ruff then it should be. I got a pic of my shocks and they look fully compressed, that may be the reason why, what do you guys think?

Take the 80s style shock boots off then let us see how much travel is left. The stock solid axle suspension dosen't offer much for travel as is. I would just throw those boots in the trash becouse all they do is hold the mud and gunk next to the shock which will cause them to rust quicker and wear the seals in the shocks faster.

Hey, i work at the one on 104th and federal, is that the one you live near? I drove the yota yesterday to work and thursday as well, its not my daily either, but i dont tow it, i drive it to and from the trails. The truck has a very ruff ride though, it was so ruff while mudding that it jarred something loose in my CB radio on my dash. So when i get off work today I will remove the shocks and take some more pics.

Went wheeling for the first time in the 4runner. I went back to that muddy field with my friend 91POS and his 01 dode dakota. I didnt want to go into a large mudd hole the fist time because i didnt have any one with me, i didnt want to get stuck. So he came and I went through it. Wow it was deep. i went kinda close to the side just to get a feel of how deep it was. It was about 3 feet deep near the sides, it came above my tires. It was the first time in 4 wheel drive as well. It ran like a dream. I went up these little 5 foot almost virtical hills as well, mind you it was muddy as hell. Well we went to my friends house to pic him up and go back because he hasnt wheeled like this ever. So we went back and i put it in 4 wheel drive again, i started through and my tires slid to one side and dropped off a little cliff in the hole and my whole front end went under water, the engine died from the water in the intake. IT wouldnt start. Good thing i had my friend with me. I opened my doors and thw water was 1 inch from the bottom of my doors, i got my tow strap and my friends chain. We got my truck out and i pulled it into a parking lot across the street. I started it up and reved it for a while. THen i drove it home. The intake is soked with mud and water, so its time for a snorkel. MY friend has the videos on his camera so i will try to get them. It was a good experience, and it was fun as hell.
