One link what
« on: Feb 04, 2009, 07:37:08 AM »
So I never did a build thread about my 1985 4runner so here i am. I have gotten some pm's about it and wanting to know about thing i have done to it and i have just been lazy but i got a new pm last night so i am going to bite the bullet if you will.

1985 4runner
22re
Alcan springs in the front (no longer in the rear)
cut front fenders, vented hood (hood vent was in the tech tab on the main pg but i dont know if they still have that stuff)
5.29 gears
front axle is stuffed with a lockright and older longs with cromo inners
running 37" mtr
Ballistic Fab weld on beadlocks (welding them up now)
Smittybilt winch (has worked great but can be a pain to in-gauge)
converted AC in inboard air system with a 2gal. tank
Ford Taurus fan
Hydro assist (about to install)
R151 tranny
dual cases
marlin dual crossmember (modified to be almost flat for the almost flat flat belly)
2x3 rock sliders
Marlin hy steer
86 rear axle with Detroit soft lock and sky's disc brakes
1-link rear suspension using tj front coils
Bobbed the rear 13" and then last winter i dove tailed it
cut rear fenders witch will be re-cut because I just lowered the runner.
Sorry for no pic yet i will add them when i get home

Rear suspension pic, OK it a 1-link (also know as trailer ball suspension) there are 2 links attached to the axle set in a triangle shape like = /\ i used 2x3x.250 tube that is welded to the axle. The pic below is the "link". it a 1.25" threaded shank (ballisticfab) welded to dom 1.5x.250 tube, that fits front toy bushings from my shackle. The square threaded insert is welded into a 2x2x4x.250 square tube that is welded between the 2x3's and all that is bolted to a bracket that is attached to the crossmember with a grade 8 3/4" bolt, the bracket it made out of 3/8" stock.

It's very common for threads to seize when they see high tension and compression loads while also trying to twist at the same time. This is why jam nuts and pivot joints are used.

I would switch to something when you can. I discovered this the hard way. And it was a nice powder coated piece, very difficult to get a chromoly rod end out of. Lol. Anti-seize didn't help.

Did you have a 1-link on one of your minis? I had a Johnny Joint that i was going to use that was suppose to have "30* of unrestricted movement" NOT!! i put it in my vise to test it and when the ball hit the cast it was at 5* so i used it for my panhard bar.

No I didn't use a one link, it happened on a wishbone though, so similar.

What about using a uniball? I have a 1" uniball with misalignments to 9/16" and it gets a ton of travel each way. Rediculous really. I am using it to build some spindles. I bet you could run a 1.5" ball with a 3/4" bolt and get even more travel. You would spend about $100-120 or so, but it would be about bullet proof.

o-ya, but not much this past year unfortunately, life kept getting in the way. So i have not got a Chance to really beat on the rear suspensions yet but with nice weather right around the corner i plan on it. COtoy91 has a Friend close to us with a rock garden of sorts and from what he has told me it sounds like a good place to beat on it and brake it lol so when the weather gets nice i will have to run up there with him and see what i can brake. had the day off yesterday so i drilled and taped and ran lines for my ram assist. now i just need to attach the ram.

now for the steering box drill and tapping for the ram assist. the last two picks areof my f-ups. the frist f-up well more of a pain in the ace. the second i was not even paying attention and drilled and tap the front of the box so i had to plug that and tap the side.

and than the first run on the new suspension. The top spring retainer was just a piece of 2" wide by 3" long by 1/4 thick flat stock, ya it was not working that happened 2 times. It is now a 3" circle cut from 1/4" stock and COtoy91 truck that rolled into a fallen tree lol

and the springs i had on the were 2" lift front tj spring. i have since lowered it 2" with stock tj springs and took out some front leafs.
