now is this something that just started happening or has it always done this? a lot of people get a SA toy and dont realize that the steering stops are on the axle, under hard turning they hit.... nothing wrong with them, thats just how they work.... on the flipside, newer vehicles with racks and pinion steering dint thunk that violently as they stop differently

Yup, I'm running stock birfs...  Nothing has changed that I meant to do...  I changed the wheel bearings back in the summer...

It does it when the hubs are unlocked, haven't checked it with the hubs locked for popping, but the last time I had them locked I noticed it seemed like there was alot of vibration...

No, I started noticing it a while back.  It isn't the steering stops.

pull the front axle apart and find out.  something could be broken, but we can't look inside the axle to find out so you are going to have to.

Dude, if I say that isn't it...  I mean that I have checked that.  Steering stops, checked them, not hitting...  Checked the tie rod ends too.  They seem good to go.  No unusual movement or looseness...  Could be a birf...  I don't know.  Could be alot of things.  I realize that no one can see inside my axle.  And yes, I could pull it out and look for anyting out of the ordinary.  But it is my daily driver right now so I don't want to just pull it apart without having an idea of what it may be... So that is where the forum comes in.  With everyones help, and input maybe I can narrow it down to one or two things to check for that I haven't already thought of or checked.  So I guess what I'm saying is...  If I checked it already, then there is a good chance I checked it already.  I haven't pulled it apart yet though, hopefully I can get a good idea of what is wrong with it before I go that route.  Who knows could be something that I have overlooked.  Thanks for everyones help.  This forum is handier than a pocket on a shirt.

Hmm...  Would the bad birfields cause the vibration when in 4wd too?

i was getting a popping noise everytime i turned too. does it do it when your not moving and you saw your wheel back and forth enough to shift the weight of your truck? the reason mine was making a popping noise was that one of the little spacer things between the leafs broke and fell out. the popping noise was my leaf spring shifting a little bit.

try lubing your shackle and spring bushings.  It sounds retarded, but mine bind and make noise unless they are lubed.

its a rubber disk that basically has bolts going through it....

Yes, it does it when it is sitting still.  I did put new poly shackle bushings in the frame tubes a month or so ago.  I don't remember hearing the noise before that...  Maybe it is binding a little.  The spacer things between the ends of the leaf spring leaves seem to be in place.  I'll try lubing the shackles tomorrow and see if that helps.  Would bolts with grease fittings on them help?  I wonder if I could just drill them and put grease fittings on there...?

Have you checked for cracks around your steering box?  As for vibration, check your pinion flange!

I have the same problem, changed the whole front axle and still have that problem. I was thinking of greasing my tie rod ends. I was also thinking that it might be the front shackles shifting back and forth, I'm going to try and tighten.  sory if this doesn't help.
I'd like to quit thinking of the present as some minor insignificant preamble to something else~~~~~

Had the same thing happening on my 85 ex cab. I thought it was birf binding. But it was my front leaf packs shifting and smacking the the inside of the front hangers. If you jack the front tires off the ground and turn your wheels lock to lock and it still makes the popping sound you can rule out that problem....also verify that the u-bolts are nice tight if you have not already. If you have a body lift of any sort check and make sure all the mounts are tight and cab is not shifting while turning. Since you allready checked all the steering components I then would check out the birfs make sure their good. I would re-grease the crap out of them if their still good.
