Brad, come down on Sat! You've got all day to get here.

I just spoke to Kyle (88_Pathy) and he has wrestling practice on Sunday at 10am, so he wants to go in on Sat. around lunch time and play around, and then camp with us, and then head back to Fresno in the morning.

I am going to talk to BIRDDOG and a couple others. I might head up their mid day Saturday with Kyle.

Brad: We'll all pitch in $5 per person for your gas money! :gap: It ain't no Rubicon, but its fun still :yesnod:

ummmmmmmmmmmm :headscratch:

I don't know what I was posting in here. I thought this was our Thanksgiving thread for our run on Sat. in two days. whoops

Well, you should still come down to bald, if it is still going to be held there.

Hey lilbuddy,

Maybe we should start a poll and see how many people would rahter go to Bald or somewhere up near Paradice or something.....

Its a good question that has been asked to me a couple of times via PM, and I just responded to Duffil about it, so I figured I would post it here for all to read:

This may be a bit flamboyant, but it should give you a good idea of it. I am not an expert on the trail like many others are here, so this is all from memory. I hope there's not too much :bull crap: here, so just take this for what it is-

Quote from: Duffil
Mike, I was looking at some of the previous bald mtn runs, and at lilbuddy's upcoming run, and curious what you would consider minimum equipment to run this trail, and what you would consider recommended equipment.

Well Bald Mountain really isn't that hard until the snow hits.

When dry, there are only about 2 small climbs that are non-bypassable, and any other major obstacles have bypass routes.

In general, a stock truck with no lockers, IFS, stock suspension, no gearing, no Crawler, with some decent 31" tires should be able to do Bald when dry. Especially up the back route, which is only about a 30 min fireroad access to the Tower, and can be done in 2WD without airing down.

If you wanted to really challenge yourself and try all of the hard spots, then I would recommend at least 35s with decent fender clearance, at least dualcases (or at least 100:1 Crawl Ratio) with at least 4.88s, at least a rear bumper, and at least locked in the rear.

Now remember that I have only done this trail while dry ONCE in my truck, and that also happens to be the only time that I EVER remember enough about the trail to make any suggestions about it.

This weekend I am going to see a lot of new hardspots that I have not been introduced to yet. There is something called Beer Rock, Radiator Rock, DC Hardway, and a bypass Gatekeeper (its funny because even the so called "Gatekeeper" has a bypass to it).
the Gatekeeper and DC Hardware are nearly IMPOSSIBLE IN THE SNOW and the others I have been told are pretty good for a fixed up truck.

I will have a much better and more clear description of Bald Mountain after this Sunday for sure. I will take a good memory with me.

As for Bald Mtn in the snow, well, lets just say that if the conditions are bad, then you are going to need at least 200+ HP and 14" wide tires of at least 37" diameter.

The reason why Bald is so much fun in the snow is that there are THREE reeeeeally long hills that must be climbed to get to the top. And they get harder as you go: The 2nd hill is longer than the 1st and the 3rd hill is the steepest with the shortest room to accelerate with due to a creek crossing at the bottom (which shows as a huge rut when covered in snow).

Many people can make it over the first hill, but the 2nd and 3rd hill really separate those who simply cant make it and those who will be running up and down and up and down the same hill with a tug strap helping people get unstuck.

There is a local guy who runs 37" richard Cepeks and surprisingly enough he has a carburated 2nd gen, and he is an amazing snow driver. He knows when to go up, what to do once hes there, and what side of the hill to drive on. I'm sure he has memorized the weather and temperature patterns and he knows at what time you should turn around if you have not made it to the top yet, because that can be just as bad because these hills have a slight downslop after them, and if you are up there all day, then your tracks freeze up in the evening and you end up trying to drive up ice slopes to get home. And if your rig is crippled or your tired or you are low on fuel, then it can actually get pretty dangerous up there. The weather conditions change really quick there, so I always prepare to bring enough warm clothes to stay in my truck if I have to.

I have wheeled Bald 4 times in the snow and once dry. At first I liked the snow, then I began to hate it, and now I am really itchen to go to the snow again. I really want to drive Bald in the dry just to see how easy it could be made, and how difficult it could be made.

Expect a full trip report upon our return Sunday night

It should also be noted that the back route I speak of only taking 20-30 mins in 2WD is closed in the winter. So the only way in and out of the Tower in the snow is from the lower access via Rock Creek Road

Hey, if this run is open invitation, I'd love to join.  :yesnod: . . . I vote Bald mtn., but I'd probably still be up for a run on the Rubicon (never done it before). . . .

Well I have two options. I am building the 60 now. I am also working on a front Toyota housing  :flamer:. I may put the 60 in the rear. I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I will wait until they are both done and then decide.

I'm down to go wheelin any place. I just want to get out.
