Octane is really simple...it's a measure of how easily the gasoline will burn. The reason "race" engines need a fuel with a higher octane rating is not the cam...it's only because of compression. A high compression engine will diesel, the fuel will ignite from compression alone. The higher octane rating of race gas makes it harder to ignite the gas, so it won't ignite until it gets a spark. If your timing is right...a stock, or near stock, compression Toyota engine doesn't need high octane fuel...you might as well be giving the extra $$$ to the local food bank, at least it'll do somebody some good. My engine is around 11 to 1 and I have never needed to use anything other than 87 octane. If you have any doubts try this link http://www.howstuffworks.com/question90.htm

.... i know the more octane.... the better.... TO A POINT!
if you go too much octane in a street legal vehicle, it not only becomes illegal, but it starts harming :pokinit:.... therefore reversing the purpose.

Oh man, you too have been snowballed!  I always :rofl2:  when some poor sob informs me that you'll blow up an engine if you use high octane gas  :haha:  I'm fairly performance ignorant, but one of the few things I picked up growing up around stocker and te51levin was if you use a high octane fuel in a normal engine it'll......  run!  I've run 110 octane in a stock engine, flogged it unmericful for hours and never had any issue.  Only reason I ran it was cause it was barely more at the race track and I just wanted to smell it  :haha:

no. Race fuel/high octane runs cooler than lower octane fuel and doesn't hurt anything.

THK Matt

thats good to know.... cause higher octane takes less effort to ignite, correct? thus less heat is created.

I think maybe you are confusing gasoline (and octane boosters) with other exotic fuels or additives, which are not designed for use in a normal gasoline engine.  And you may be thinking that higher octane = more power output.

Not to oversimplify, an engine's power output is determined by the components of the engine and its control mechanisms, whether mechanical (old school) or electronic.  If an engine is designed such that it requires high octane gasoline, then using low octane gas can harm the engine.  But if it is designed for low octane gas, using high octane will not make it produce more power.  Of course, if carbon deposits cause the engine to ping (spark knock, pre-ignition, detonation) on 87 octane, using a premium grade may be used to solve mask the problem.

Which is why I said a stock-ish Toy engine is fairly low compression and since higher octane resists compression ignition...higher octane fuel isn't needed. True, if you have a high compression engine you can cause damage because of detonation. But, most people know if they have a 12.5:1 engine and will use higher octane fuel. BUT...you can have a static compression ratio of 8:1, but have an effective ratio of 12:1 if you've added a turbo or supercharger, you will need higher octane in that case.

I use the premium high octane gas in my truck (exxon specifically) so i can bump the timing more without detonation. The engine will not allow you to do that on regular because it begins to detonate.

Nope...higher octane fuel is harder to ignite, it resists compression ignition.

The bottom line is...if you have a stock engine use what the manufacturer suggests. Running race gas in a low/stock engine is unnecessary.

The reason people run high octane fuel (or fuel with additives) is to stop compression ignition so the charge will ignite at the proper time...when the spark plug lights it off. In a 12.5:1 engine 87 octane might light off at only 1/4 of the piston uptravel (detonation) causing the piston to fight the explosion the rest of the way toward the top. In a stock engine 87 octane will just compress until it is ignited, just before the top of the upstroke. All this is because all things being equal...compression causes heat, check out the high pressure side of a refrigeration unit.

I often reread something I said, like in your quote, and think I may not have made point very well...most times my mind goes way faster than my fingers, so I kind of fragment my answers. (I think it has something to do with all my partying in the 70's)  :dunno:
