Well now that I found that my cap was totally destroyed, my gas mileage should sky rocket back up to where it was.

I had noticed a slight miss, but figured it was in my valvetrain (my whole valvetrain needs to be replaced).  Yesterday the motor cut out on me a few times, so I popped the hood, checked the wires plugging into the cap, pushed on the coil wire and the cap crumbled.  The coil wire went bad, came off a little, and was arching off the cap itself, so it completely burned the cap to a hard ash.  I almost :pokinit:.  Hell, even my rotor was black.

Mine is dropping also.  I think it is about 12 mpg now.  But my speedo is 3 mph off at 25mph so that has some effect on it.  My engine is also dieing, compression is going through the rings.

my suburban gets 17 city and 18 highway at 75mph. not bad for a 350 4x4.
cant wait to get my motorcycle license tho, 1971 honda cb100, rated for 55-60mpg! only problem is it tops out at 70 mph, so it doesnt make it up to highway speeds in texas. :rivers:

My 82 22r w/ 30's and stock suspension, but with an old school camper and roof rack got 15 mpg at mostly highway miles on the last tank. I can really tell that camper/roof rack is back there. So I foresee a day when it will probably come off for gas savings sake. There seems to be a lot of wind drag when out on the highway, so I suspected it would be an issue. I hate to get rid of the camper, but I bought the 82 to be a DD, but it's not getting as good of mielage as my 97 K1500 w/ lift & 33's. So, it's either sell it, or squeeze out some better mileage.

If it's the shell in your avatar it's definately a wind catcher!  If you get one that sits down flush with the cab you shouldn't really see much of a difference.  I ran this one and my mileage was the same with or without it.

Yeah, I pretty much know I'm gonna have to get rid of the camper. It's set up great, by the PO .. but it's not meant for DD duty, or for mileage. I hate to remove it, as I can get some use from it.. but the amount of use I'll get from it isn't worth the mileage I'll get. So, since it's a clean little 1st gen, I plan to get a tailgate and rear window (it's removed for a pass through boot) and put it back to an open bed PU.

It has sheet metal screws holding the top on, and all around the rear window for the boot.. so I'll be refilling those and a repainting it once it's back to an open bed.

There are differences in the toppers. While the aluminum one you are running is a wind-catcher on the highway, the fiberglass ones will make a difference in city driving. Since the fiberglass ones are MUCH heavier, you will see a small drop in mileage in town, from getting the extra weight moving repeatedly. On the highway, the weight does not affect the mileage as much (unless there are a lot of hills, where the weight will again put additional load on the engine). The normal figure for in-town driving is that you will lose 1 mpg for every additional 100 pounds added to the vehicle. This again, is within limits. My dad used to have a '72 dodge 1 ton that got 10 mpg, loaded, empty, and also after he installed a cabover camper on it. (It was because of the low gearing.)

The 22r seems to be the happiest if it is geared so that the cruising or highway speed is achieved at around 2750 - 3000 rpm. My trip to Ocala was 350 miles and got ~25 mpg. (22r-e, 5 speed, 5.29's with 33's - 3000 rpm's at 60mph) And, I was running 70 - 75 the whole way. Now, I am running the same setup with 36's and am running right around 15-16 mpg. The more you make the engine labor, the worse mileage you will get.
It ain't worth doin' if you don't have to clean up afterwards!

Build it, break it, fix it, repeat until your wallet is empty.

I shall infuse thy Jeep with the Essence of Toyota...and maybe that one won't pee on itself at the first sight of granite. - Duffil

Well, if we're gonna count trucks other than Toyotas...  oh hell, I can't bear to type it out again, so I'll cut & paste from the Gas Prices thread.  Keep in mind this was in winter and my warm-up time was greater than my drive time, but still...   :screwy:

"Last winter when I had to warm up the truck before going to work, I did a rough check and found I was getting about 2 mpg...  seriously.    :ack: "

On a brighter note, our '05 Tacoma averages about 18 mpg
My goal in life is to be as a good a person as my dog already thinks I am.
