motor problem
« on: Jul 06, 2006, 12:11:41 PM »
heres the deal me and a buddy were up wheelin and just drivin along and i heard a really faint shallow pop about like snapping your fingers. my motor died and hasn't run since. when i hit the ignition the starter starts to turn the flywheel but stops and makes a high pitch whining sound. i put a new starter in it, checked the flywheel (to make sure i wasn't missing teeth), checked spark and air and gas. all is there. the motor is a 22r completly rebuilt with only 3000 miles on it. any suggestions on what could be the problem.

Pops make me think electrical.  Check all your grounds, check for loose or frayed wires, something shorting out somewhere.  Check the battery...you may have blown your alternator.  Also check fuses and the big fusible links in the black box... they like to POP when they go bad.

Also, clean connections where needed in your starter circuit. Check the pos. cable to your starter solenoid for burns or areas where grounding may have occured. Take the starter into your local parts store and have it tested to make sure you didn't fry the solenoid. The high pitch whinning sounds like the starter is not fully enguaging the flywheel.

i put a new starter in it and checked the flywheel, the old and new starter are acting the same way, on the pos cable to the starter there aren't any burn marks and i couldn't find any disconnected gound wires. all the wiring has been redone because of the new motor so nothing is frayed. the truck has only been up once before this

Doubt it has anything to do with the starter...way you describe it is that you just arent getting enough juice to the starter to torque the engine over...it is going somewhere...just gotta find out where.

if the motor died while running, that would rule out the starter

funny  thats what i thought when i started reading his comments about a faint pop

dude,  i'm sure you have a couple bent valves  so put the new chain on and turn it over with no plugs in, and see if you have compression on all 4  if not  a valve got majorly SMACKED

Ive got a set of valves off of a 20r motor that ran would i be better off putting that head on my 22r or should i just fix the bent valve in my existing 22r. ive heard the 20r head in a 22r motor will give you more compresion as well as more top end will this help or hinder me in the mountains?

I am going to put in the 20r head because it will cost to much money to redo the head on the 22r. The only question i have is that the 20r head has a dual chian system on it and the 22r motor had a single chian on it what should i do change the crank gear or change the double chain to a single chain?
