Is it fairly new?  If not, they are cheap and I'd get a new one.

make sure that dang balancer  shield is on all the way, and make sure the oil pump drive gear on the crank and timing gear are the right ones,

Also, is the shield bent? Why is it rubbing? Make sure the crank does not move in and out or this could be why it was rubbing.

If it does, you know the thrust washers are bad.

...................... and the only place I can hear it is when  the end of the scope is on the timing marks on the oil pump housing.  weird I know.  ................

TIA

So the stethoscope was pointing right to the problem area but no one thought of the balancer.....  Next time. :therethere:

From what I can tell it is on all the way.  I was wondering if there is supost to be a spacer, but didn't see one in the FSM.  I belive all of the parts are the right ones...

Also, is the shield bent? Why is it rubbing? Make sure the crank does not move in and out or this could be why it was rubbing.

If it does, you know the thrust washers are bad.

The crank has no endplay that I can tell with my 1ft pry bar.  I read that its supost to have like .003-.007 end play.  There was NO metal in the oil this time, and from what I can tell with the oil pan off, the thrust washers are fine.

So the stethoscope was pointing right to the problem area but no one thought of the balancer.....  Next time. :therethere:

yep, I am an idot!

FINISHED!

Just taped the dust cover on more with a rubber hamer (moved about 1/16th) and I am good to go.  I know now that I didn't need to change my timing kit, but I am glad that I did because this DOA kit is really nice!

Thanks for all the help!

Before you put it back on, you might want to replace the bolts in the balancer with some of the correct length.  If you look at the pics above, it appears that is what pushed the shield back(notice the 4 8mm indentations). :twocents:

also....RECHECK your endplay just for kicks....now your dust cover isnt working as one of your thrust bearings....you might have done this already
Sand, what fun, drop pressure to 12psi, stock tires are still digging, can't afford to get stuck, 8psi, still not working. Find a place to GET OUT, air up, un-lock hubs,  WAIT whats this, hubs are UN-LOCKED already. 2wd, 8psi, stock tires, Oregon sand dunes.

I FIGURED THIS POS OUT!!!!  only its to late to save the $300 i just spent on it, and now its gunna be more!

The dust shield on the harmonic balancer was rubbing on the oil pump!

Freekin SOB!  If I would have just pulled the balancer off and looked at it.  Oh well, the new timing kit is WAY nicer than the old one.  However I broke my timing cover, so now I have to take it back off and replace it!
