W56 problem ?
« on: Jan 24, 2005, 09:26:26 AM »
Well I blew a rear ring & pinoin over the weekend so I removed the rear driveline so I could drive it to the trailer easier. Then I noticed with the tranny in Neutral and the T-case in 4 double low (2.28 X 4.70) the vehicle would start to roll forward on its own on flat ground!  :dunno: I could hop out and stop it pretty easy but as soon as I let go of it, it would start moving again. Why would I have power to the wheels if I'm in neutral!  :headscratch:  and let me repeat this was on flat ground because if turned the engine off it would NOT roll.

So I'm assuming this means I need to tear into my tranny......   but what would cause this?  :sad2:

Its the drag caused by the thick gear oil.  I can park my truck on a slight uphill grade and put the trans in neutral and the cases in double down (2.28x4.7) and it will stay where its at.  If I shut it off the truck rolls back down the hill.  You dont have any problems with the trans.  Its just viscosity in action.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

I've seen this first hand also.  In my truck with dual cases when it is real real cold out and in neutral with no e brake on, it's on auto pilot trying to move into the neighbors yard!

Quote from: Marlin Crawler
Rick, I recall back in '99, I selling a complete dual ultimate to a customer in Tennessee.
Soon after, I received a call about his totaled truck.

It ends up that every morning He would fire up his cold truck in the carport and leave it running in netural while he finished getting ready for work.

However, with the ultimate Crawler and cold gear oil, the truck crawled right put of the carport, coasted now his driveway, across the street and broadsided a large oak tree.

He called to inform me that I owed him a new truck.
I faxed him a copy of the owners manual that states to always set the parking brake when the truck is running in netural and gave him the phone # of my lawyer.

I never heard back from him again.

Okay, thanks for the info...... I'm glad I don't have a problem.
