22re is smoking.... help me...
« on: Apr 27, 2006, 12:16:04 PM »
I cant seem to go more than 2 weeks without replacing parts on one of my toyotas... now my 86 22-re in my 4runner is buring oil... producing a fair amount of smoke when i go slowly downhill......  i have burned about half a quart in 500 miles.... what should i do?  How long will this engine last buring oil like this?  Do i need to rebuild?  What are my options?
Thanks,
Andy

"Later, I learned that even though I engage 4WD my hubs are not automatically locking? Something about manual locking hubs I think. What's manual mean? I need to read a manual to lock them? lol  So I found these neat autolocking hubs and installed them. Sometimes they dont stay locked while I am backing up, but that's fine because I dont have a backup camera to see where Im going (like our RV) so I just simply dont ever back up"- BigMike

Do a cylinder leak down test, sounds like a stuck ring or a broken one. Hopefully its just high manifold vacuum sucking oil past the valve stem seals or a worn valve guide= easy common 22re stuff.  Good luck.   Mike :turtle:

1/2 a qt in 500 miles   ive seen brand new engines burn more oil than that,  probably a valve stem seal, no big deal man, dont worry about it

when you burn a quart in 100 miles then  its time for some new rings,

no more than you are burning i wouldnt touch a thing

Is a valve stem seal hard to change out?

yea  thats just a valve stem seal,  well you CAN do it without removing the head,  but usually is done when the head is rebuilt

you have to remove the valve spring and retainer and replace the stem seal,  not really worth the trouble if ya ask me
