22re smoking at start up, any help ??
« on: Jan 14, 2011, 09:25:45 PM »
I have a 22re that i just did a head gasket replacement on, brand new head, new cam, new timing kit, new oil pump, new water pump... The shop i got the new head from swapped my valves and i believe used new valve seats. When i drove the truck into the shop to swap the head gaskets it was smoking white smoke horribly. Put the new head gasket on and everything else and started it and it was still smoking the same white smoke but not as bad as before, drove it around the block and the smoke went away after about a mile and a half... It continues to smoke at start up and for the first mile and a half, it is alot of white smoke out the exhaust too. I went to the gas station and turned the truck off and turned it back on and there is no smoke. It only smoke if the truck is off for an hour or so... I have a exhaust leak between the exhaust manifold and the head at the moment but that could not because any problem like that... Does any one have any ideas to help? Thanks

hoe many time have you driven it? it usually takes awhile for the water in the exhaust to fully burn off. and if im not mistaken there are a couple exhaust studs that go into water jackets

Some times oil leaks down the valve seals, idk if you replaced these
This will cause smoke for a few minutes in the morning start up

How did the block look when you installed the head, was it good
Was it rusty , was it decked or cleaned up w a scuff pad?
And were your old valves cut after the new seats were installed
Did they pressure check?   Was the head decked
I'll try to help you !

The head is brand spanking new, the shop I bought the head from swapped the valves and put new seals in the valves.. The block looked fine, no rust, I cleaned it well with a razor blade.. I am not sure if it's burning water or not will be able to check tomorrow because I have to drive truck about an hour.. Thanks for the help so far guys it's much appreciated!! Keep the thoughts coming :)

New valve seats and old valves ? Or new valve seats and fresh cut valves
I only ask because the oil drops on to the pistons
What does it sound like when it's cranking
Is it a steady stroke or does the strokes get faster then slower!!

New valve seats and old valves is correct.. It starts after about 1 second of cranking.. The smoke doesn't come usually until 30 seconds to a minute after the truck is started
