I used 1 1/2" .125 wall round tube. The rock skid is 2"x4" .125 wall square and its attached to the frame in 3 places with 1 1/2 x 3 rectangular tube that is welded to the frame and the body mount. I plan on plating the bottom with some angle to give the rock skid some wear thickness. I didn't want to use thicker square tube because of the weight. I bolted the cage to the skids with square brackets that I bent to fit over the edge to give it more strength. I have the bed solid to the frame and it comes apart with a tube inside and a bolt through it so I can leave the bed when I remove the cage. I only made it to remove so I could take it off to do things like change the windshield. I plan to finish the bed after a few runs to see if I want to change the wheelbase or shock placement or something. I don't want to finish the bed only to cut it off again to change something.

KYOTA

definately unique and nice to see something out of the ordinary, but I guess I have a soft spot for that body style since my first Toy back in high school was a 78 sr5

I don't understand why more people in California don't build them. Anything registered as a 1975 or earlier is exempt from smog checks here. I still want to get a VW TDI to put in it. I've seen websites claiming around 140hp with intake and exhaust modifications and almost 200hp with a computer programer like they use on the diesel trucks. It would have tons of torque too.

Such a cool build. I love the oldies!

did you change the frame to a four wheel drive one or does that truck have the same style crosemember as a four wheel drive.

Time to go wheelin!

I had to use a 4X4 frame. I tried to use the stock frame (the picture of the truck on the trailer has the stock frame on it) but it was about 5 inches too narrow where the rear part of the front springs attach. The front crossmsmber is about 8 inches higher than a 4X4. You can see in one photo how high the front body mounts are on the early body. Those were on the stock frame even with the crossmember. I had to take a 4x4 frame and cut the body mounts off, move the rear one forward, redrill the cab for the middle and make new mounts for the front. The rear of the stock frame is not as wide as the 4x4 either so the springs don't line up with the pads on the stock diff.

yotakid88

for the spring pad problem. if and when you build a rear axle for it you sould pick up a newer one or you could put new pads on, but if you get a newer rear axel say of from 90's truck it would be wider so you would get more stibitly.

cool build so far.  I have to say I haven't seen anyone do a 75 build before.  Keep up the awesome work.

It has the wide rear housing in it and spacers in the front. I took it up for a test run yesterday. Woo Hooo!!!!  It went everywhere I tired until I found the weak link.. Bent the front driveline and it dropped it out... Took it out and made one with square trailer hitch metal. I never was a square driveline fan but that sucker won't bend or slip out. One 1/4" wall tube inside another 1/4" wall tube.  It dosen't flex anywhere near as far as my old '69 Bronco but its light and just hops up and over rocks. All in all I'm really happy with it. Tomorow I'm going to go by Marlins and pick up a 4.70 gearset. I wanted a skidplate but see he has the gearset on special for $399 so I figure to pick it up now and save some $$$.

Took the truck to Bald mt today. Trailered it to the trailhead in case something broke I wouldn't have to walk as far. Other than having to stop and beat the crossmember with a hammer so the driveline would clear the day was good. I would have been there all day but some guys from San Jose came by and loaned me a bigger hammer. I was planning on getting a Marlin skid plate before taking it up but they were out of stock when I went to get it. I just dragged my drainplug on the rear case once going over beer rock. I now wish I had got 37" MTR's instead of 35's. Enough yapping, here are the photos of posi hill.

One more pic. This is the one where I wish I had got 37's, I just couldn't quite get over it. The back tires would come up to a small overhang and stop me. I might do better when I get more weight on the back too. I still have to mount my spare, finish the bed and mount a tool box of some kind.

right on bro!!! hooray for different

lucas @4x4 labs in grass valley built a 64 0r 65 a while ago, with a chev motor...it was baddass

great work man, i wanna see it!! you commin to mcr5??

75 toy

I don't know if I can make it. I have to see how things go at work and make it a last minute decision. I hate when work gets in the way of important stuff. I do want to go do the Rubicon tho. I've never done it, been on Dusey and eveything around Fresno but all in my early Bronco. I want to go try the hammers sometime too.

crawlerdan

i would do the con a few times before you try the hammers man....hammers is a whole new world :yesnod:

Nice Hilux man. I love seeing these trucks turned into something different. I found a cherry 75 for sale  a few months back but when i asked the hippy when I could come pick it up, he backed out of the deal  :tantrum:

anyway, looks good. nice work. have a good one.

That truck is in pretty good shape for being a 75'.  Most of the ones I see that are that old are in pretty poor condition.

Are you out of Fresno?

Spare is going in the back and I'm planning some sort of rack for a ice chest and toolbox. I got a winch that is too big to fit in the grille so it's going on a reciver hitch and it will go somewhere in the back too. It went up V rock like going over the curb, Hollywood was a piece of cake. I had trouble with the far right of posi hill tho. I need IROC 38's or 39's on it next time. I'm still running stock birfields but by the time my MTR 35's wear out I'll have longfields and won't have to worry. I want to put in a heavy transfer case output shaft but I'm going to wait for Marlin's that will disconnect the rear.  I got the rear fenders on and the tire rack done. I'll get a photo on this weekend. I live in Clovis. If things work out I'll trailer it up this weekend somewhere.

YAH!  :bowdown:That things got me all pumped up!! Serious 'yota porn. I'm drooling over that thing.
A 3rz (tacoma 4cyl, 150hp) would kick ass in that truck. You did a great job on the tube.

75 toy

Got my 30 spline longfields in. Wo hoo, I took a photo of all the axles side by side but wouldn't you know it. My digital camera went south. Guess bouncing in the glove box of the truck was a little more than it could handle.  Took it up today and tried it out. Axles worked great but I found out at what angle a weber carb starves out....see the photo.
I did a onboard air setup too. I'll get photos of that in this week. I used a electric pump that I think is used on some diesels or something and found a tank that was a little wide and cut 4" out of the middle of it with a bandsaw and welded it back together. I'm glad it was mounted under the spare the first time I filled it up with 100psi but it didn't pop and I'm still here.
The main part of the build is looking like its getting there. I think I'm going to look into propane again so I can run on any angle. The other good thing is that I could use it on whatever motor I use. I still don't want efi because of the wiring nightmare. The truck has wiring gremlins already. I want to twin stick it until Marlin gets the rear disconnect on the market and I need bigger tires. I'm going to redrill my front pads and get my front end back out where it was. I changed the front springs to a set of Marlins and moved my front end back 1" from where it was with the rears up there. I need a link on the rear to stop the axle wrap......Maybe I'm not getting there.  OK, pic of the carb stall and I'll get back with onboard air and stuff later.

Very nice rig and a sub 1st gen to boot.

Got my ram assist steering done. Went togather pretty well when I finally made myself do it. I had to get it somewhere else  :yikes: because Marlin dosen't sell them . I didn't like the way they wanted the ram mounted because according to the instructions "A common problem with RAM assist steering is interference between the ram and the u-bolt flip kit on the drivers side of the truck. This is resolved by rotating the driver side of the ram upward by twisting the tie rod." This seemed a bit mickey mouse to me so I looked at the travel of the ram and the distance between the springs and saw that if you just mount the ramm closer to the passenger spring you don't have to worry because it won't reach the drivers side spring. Wonder why they didn't think of that? :hammer: Anyway I modified the ram bracket and mounted it to the diff and it all cleared. I didn't like welding the bracket to the tie rod either. If you do that you cant adjust the toe without turning the tie rod a full turn. ????  I made a sleeve that fit my 1 1/4" tie rod and cut the bracket down to compensate for the added size before I welded it on. I tapped 3 holes for set screws in the front side to keep it in place. Then I made to short sleeves ( 1/2" long) and put them on each side of the center piece with the bracket on it and welded them to the tie rod. Now the center sleeve with the bracket is locked between the outer sleeves and can't slide on the tie rod and the set screws just keep it fron rotating. Now to adjust the toe you just loosen the set screws, rotate your tie rod to where it needs to be then tighten the set screws again. If I have a problem with the set screws not holding I can just use a drill through the hole and dimple the tie rod so the screws set in the holes. I have my PS pump on the passenger side of the motor (I'm using a saginaw pump off a chevy truck) so I run the hoses across the front of the radiator and used that space to put a cooler. Summit sells these tranny coolers that work great for PS coolers.
I think I'm about ready for the All Pro event at the hammers so I hope the next photos of the truck with the IROK's on it will be from there.
