I REALLY love the new Runner!  The silver paint and black top look sweet!  I know how functional the body armor is on the other runner, but I much prefer the stock body look.

Any plans for a rear bumper?  What is your final wheelbase?

yeah I am going to be either building a bumper or buying marlins.  I'm also putting or building some rock sliders on.  I don't know if that'll be done by next weekend but we'll see.  I plan on doing a new paint job sometime in the future as well.  The paint looks worse than pictures show.  I might do a yamaha blue body and repaint the top but sand it down like crawlerdan did and have a glass like finish.

88-REDRYDER

that is a work of art right there looks good and not half assed

Yea, definitely sand down the top. I did it to mine and I like it a lot better without the orange peel look (Especially if you paint it)  :twocents:

Yamaha blue would be sick too, and rare

I said around 4 to 5, the way I'm getting that measurement is that the pitman arm was about 4, to 5 inches off. I had the marlin springs on my 90 and its been SAS'd but the steering was just right, and didn't need the steering box to be moved.

I wonder if the steering boxes are in different spots or something on the second and third gens because we didn't have to move rhgs box with the marlin springs (1 1/2" fwd)  but had to move mine way up there on my 86 which is 3" forward

Volcom

Nice work.  You have gotten more done in 3 days than I've gotten done to any of my three Toyota's in 1.5 years  :rofl2:

Looks great, should perform great on the trail with the new suspension.  Do you think you're going to have to trim the rear sheet metal to get those tires not to rub?  I'm probably going to tub the rear of my 4Runner a bit to make the tire rub not as bad.

Once again, great build up thread  :beerchug:

thanks volcom, To be honest that the fastes I've ever gotten something of that size done on one of my rigs before.  I aways seem to get distracted when I work on something but I think it helped that I did it 95% by myself.  I'd just get in a rythem and just keep crackin on it.  But don't think the build is over I still have quite a bit to do before my Moab trip with blackdiamond in March.  I'm currently working on the stereo and this next week the dual cases will go in with a all pro crossmember I had sitting around.

bbw, I'll do some measuring to figure out how far it really did more forward.  I'll check my 85 runner and measure out the stock location to get a exact measurement of the position of the axle.  All I know is I want a near verical approach angle as possible.  When I start building my full width runner I'm proabably going to bob it and try to get a near verical departure angle.

toyo487

That is a sweet runner.  I wish I could afford to do a SAS on my 89 toy, but with a baby due in 8 october I don't think that will ever happen.   :tantrum:   But a kid will be fun.  I love those tires they are sweet.   That is one Bad Ace runner man.

gotrocks

Hey Jon, glad to see you found my buildup.
I am not going to be here this weekend I'm going wheeling over in at Evens creek near MT. Rainer with blackdiamond.

I just got my dual cases in last night and hopefully I'll get my rock lights on today before I leave.  I'll be posting pictures up from our wheeling adventure when I get back.

blackdiamond

I just got back from wheeling with gotrocks and his new toy.  He was kind enough to drag me along throughout the day.  He managed to climb a section of trail that everyone else had either turned around or pulled the winch.  He climbed both possible lines and then drug me up one of them.  I guess that made me the 2nd truck to make it up without a winch  :ha_ha:   It was a prime example of driver skill, great tires and an excellent rig all coming together.

Keep an eye out as he should be posting pictures in the next few days.

BD thanks for meeting up with me to go wheeling. I'll be posting pictures this evening.  I can't wait to go wheeling more now that I have a good working rig.

Dig you could start the thread.

Gotrocks - I have been thinking about the trip and wondering if my truck might have done a little better if I had added some weight in the bed.  The fact that it was driving down the "main" roads like it was in 2wd (the back end was sliding all over the place while in 4wd) I suspect that I wasn't getting much "bite" by the rear tires.  I am going to look into getting my BFGs sipped (spelling?) and depending on cost I might have it done.  I'm having largers tires wouldn't hurt either.

All I have to say is your truck performed flawlessly :respekt:

well the weight would've been ok except normally in the snow the lighter the better.  But on some of the trails that snow really sucked for traction.  I wouldn't be suprised if my runner had about the same PSI on the ground as your tires did since mine are so much wider.  I think I'm going to go 4 wheeling this week after school.  I just can't wait to go again.

the runner looks greats really like the tire wheel combo.  what size and back spacing are you using?

Thanks

bd, next time you go, get  2-3 sandbags, and fill them with dirt, sand, whatever.  Butt them up agfains the tailgate.  You'll get yourself some better traction, and if your tires slip, you can toss some filling material under your tires for traction.  Supermat has done that for years, when he was big into skiing, and I've done it when I go up to the snow   makes life a lot easier.  (:psss: get the tarp material sandbags, the burlap ones stink to high heaven when they get wet)

yep and i had to do a little trimming in the rear.  I moved the axle back around an inch or so.  My w/b is now 108".   The front needs a little hammer action done to it to give me a little more clearance, but not to much is needed.

Shamb

right on, so whats max articulation like?  you should post up some pics   ;)

Well when we got there it was actually not that cold.  They had recieved about a 1 foot of snow during the week and had quite a bit already on the ground up at Evans Creek.  I towed my truck a ways down the road until I found a decent parking spout and we unloaded around 11:00 or so.

A pic of the main road we towed in on.  I'm glad I have big tires and good tires on my tow rig.  It gets me closer incase I break down for some reason.

Another picture showing bd's truck in the snow just after we aired down I think

I have to admit I love the look of how wide my rig sits.  Lots of stability from the little bit of offroading I've gotten to do so far

Well BD wasn't able to make it up everything so I lent him a handy strap every now and again.

gotrocks

A picture from inside as we pulled bd up the hill

We eventually came upon a group that wasn't moving.  At first we couldn't figure out why they were stopped because no one seemed to be working on anything but after we got out and asked what was going on we found out that there were over 7 rigs in front of us that were not able to make it up this one obsticle and so we went to go see what all of the trouble was about.

Some of you might recognize the red 2nd gen runner from the pirate board.  Crash did the motor swap on it and it was a truely nice piece of work.  D60/14b axled 39.5 IROKS SB350 350 203/205 rig.

This little 3rd gen was having a tuff time going up the alternate route and after giving it a valient attempt they decided to go the main route.  Funny thing is we bd and I came back to this trail later in the day after turning around I made it up 2 times with little effort and the main by way (one that the guy in the Red 2nd gen runner told us that we'd never get up without a winch) towing bd up the hill

Main route
