I started the build up of my daily driver. :driving:
Now some may questioin the level of work I am going thru just to make a daily driver, but I have to have somthing to do to keep me out of trouble.    Besides once this thing is complete I have somthing stiring in the back of my mind that would exite you but you will have to wait.

First things first, here are some pics of the frame with the bed off.
I swear the bed was holding this thing together. :smack:

Some more with some flex to it.  Notice the spring hanger.

whiteman

A little  :flamer:for 20-30min and she ends up like this.

I have cut the frame right in front of the rear body mounts.  I am picking up a frame from a 86 ex-cab short bed this weekend and cutting it to the desired length then attaching it to the rest of the 85 frame.
The frame was rusted through till about 7-8 inches forward from the rear body mount.  More will be added this weekend.

WOW thats alot of rust damage. Good luck on the repair :beerchug:

:headscratch: At this point I dont know if I want to get that other frame and put them together or just take he entire winter to save up and slowly build a 4-link with coils and tube the rear of it.

I am a lost cause.... :hammerhead:

brainlessfool

with the kind of damage due to rust your showing I think I'd change the whole frame.
A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

whiteman

The  funny thing about that is, the rest off the frame is ok.
About 7-8 forward from the rear cab mount there is a welded seam all the way around the frame.  From that point forward the under coating on the frame is solid, no cracks, flakes, or visable erosion like the rear of the frame.

The inside of the frame from that seam forward, is also in good condition, no flaking rust, just on th surface and that can be rubbed away with your finger.   :dunno:
It seams odd to me that half the frame is completely rusted at one end and the other is not.
One thought I had was, if the truck was only used as a snow plow, then the only time it saw the road was in snowy, salty conditions.  So each time the truck was parked it had all that snow on it trapping the salt.  But to wards the front of the frame the heat from the motor, trany, t-case, exhaust continuously melted any snow off the frame and as the snow melted off fairly quickly, it washed the salt off the frame so no erosion could occur.

Just my  :twocents:

I say tube the rear. Your half way there now. No sense in hacking another frame back into it. Save and do it the way you want. Trust me if you save and take your time to build what you want your enjoy it more.

Yea I did not buy the frame this weekend, I am going to tube the rear of it when I get the money.

Gearhead Wiki

haha and I thought that my frame was rusty

To The Floor

just dovetail the rear with tube a little bit, wide enough so you can mount some inboarded springs on there.  start over doin it narrower so tires wont contact the frame, then u can build what u want.
in the projects nooga, anything goes

whiteman

I went and picked up my metal today, 36' ft of dom 2" .120 wall tubing, 6ft of 2x4 .250 wall rectangular tube, and 6ft of 1/4" flat bar.

Time to start fabricating. :flamer:             My camera is down but I will get pics soon.

This thing is giving me a migrane.
Tub framing this thing is no longer going to happen.  I just dont want to do it right now because I dont have the resources to build it to my spec.
I have a feeling it will just be a piece of tube mangled crap.

The body is going on the 4-runner frame ( see"The Ass Handler" in project build up thread )  and I will SAS the 4-runner frame, and make new body mounts to adapt the pick up body.

I should have all the IFS cut out this weekend.

whiteman

I was away for a week or so during the holidays but now I am back on track.
The IFS is cut out of the 4-runner frame and I am almost done with the grinding.

I just ordered my crossmember center section from F.R.O.R.   I will and some pics tonight once I get the camera from my brother.

whiteman

IFS cut out and grinding is done as of tonight.

:headscratch: Can sombody tell me what this du-hickey is and what the hell it does.  It is what the brake lines go into before it splits into the rear brakes.  And then it has a long hard line that runs down at an angle to a mount on the axle housing.
Do i need it?

that is your lpsv, you can bypass it... my 85 4x2 truck doesnt have one.... its supposed to be that when there is a load/no load, it compensates the braking effect so you dont lose your ass end..... keeps it from locking up for lack of weight in the bed during hard braking

Pulled the cab out and pressure washed it, engine bay came out fairly clean.
Next is  pressure washing the 4-runner frame and then I will start installing the cab.

whiteman

Motor/Trany/T-case is cleaned and ready for instalation.   Now I just need to get the valve cover painted.

KDC

Holy crap that engine bay is sparkling.

whiteman

Got the 85 cab off the frame now I just need to turn it around and set it on the 4-runner frame.

FYI  :blah:
The the first two front body mounts and the second set of body mounts between the 4-runner and the 85 truck are the same, but the third set of body mounts for the 4-runner are 37 1/2" back from the second set were as the 85's third set of body mounts are 44" back from the second set.  Therefore I will cut off the 4-runner body mount, position the cab on the frame, and line up the first four body mounts so that when I weld on the third set they will all line up.

I know its a lot of writing for something that is not rocket science but I am bored and cant seem to sleep.

I was actually very easy.

Once the motor is out the only things you have to unhook are the brake lines running down the fire wall, steering shaft, wiring running to the Rear lights, and if you haven not pulled the trany you need to dissemble your shifters , and of course body mounts.
Just run along the frame each side and remove what is necessary.

Once every thing was unhooked I lifted the front driver side corner and had two friends lift the rear and we walked it off, unless your as big as me I would recommend having two people up front  .

Today I am going to pull the frame out and degrees it and polish it up with an SOS pad
