gear ratio for 33' tires.

  Hey guys. I am getting ready to lift my truck and switch from the 265/70R 16 that came with the truck to 33' tires.
The formula says 0.12 X "tire size"  and that gives "0.12 X 33 = 3.96". Now my Truck came with 4.10 and 30.61's.  It has a four speed,  Over-drive is 0.7, third (gear used when towing or off road) is 1:1. Since I am going to install a crawler later. I think I should be able to keep the 4.10 gears for highway/city driving, and just drop the reduction boxes in line when the road ends.

Go with the 4.88's minimum.  You'll be happier later.

If this works there should be a tire size and gear ratio chart. This should help you figure out what gears to go with based on highway speeds.

if you dont wana  spend a bunch of money   find someone thats  gettin rid of a set of 4.37s..  you wouldnt think they would make a difference over 4.10s  but they really do.  lotta guys run  them around here.  I got away with my 37" MT/R's  on them for a long time and was still able to get  reasonable gas mileage  and  cruised at 75MPH down the freeway

sure is. It's a V8 with an A340( 4 Speed Auto).   I have been looking at the gear ratio chart ( A few of them). They are based on the top gear in the transmission being a 1:1 ratio. That is my third gear on the auto. My RPMs at 60mph in 4th(overdrive 0.70:1) is about 1900-1950, third is 2800 or so with the stock 4.10 rear ends. With 4.27 or 4.88's install the calculator tells me that my RPMs at 60mph in top gear is going to be just under the 2800 RPM mark.  Now that would seem to me to defeat that purpose of having an over drive transmission on the highway.  This truck is a DD and has to travel hundreds of Miles a year on the road. The only time it will see that dirt is fishing or camping trips, plus some snowy road in the winter.  If I have a low enough ratio based on the formula, and simply drop TWO 4.70 reduction boxes in line when I need to really crawl. How can I be hurting. P.S. The 284Ci engine will give me just under 400hp if I add some  parts

with your tundra the 4.10's will be all you need,   i would use a 4.7 and a 2.28,  but your right for a commuter you dont want super low diff gears

Yeah the first time i drove it after the new gears all i thought was I need bigger tires.

First is a little granny but its not to the point of insainity and the gears do kill the freeway driveability I can do about 65 and keep the revs low but there is still so much power left I just can't use it

I have 4.10s with 33's and .67 OD.  It works great.  I turn around 2k RPM at 75mph.  I plan on going to 35's and changing to 4.88s to compensate.  There are a lot of Potential Speed Calculators on the net to help you figure your best combination.  You need to factor in the torque of the engine and all the additional unsprung weight you'll be adding with tires and wheels.

i think its funny how some of you guys think you need 5.29s to run 33's and 35's..  hell i only run a 5.13  with  37's and i have heavier axles !  i have to push a bunch more weight  but still cruise  down the freeway at 75mph.   do you guys  not have decent motors or somthin ?..  hell i was turnin  my 37s  great with my 4.37s   was still able to cruise down the highway at 75mph.  got clocked going 90mph once..   


With your v8  and 33's  you will only need a max of 4.37 gears. which can be had for about 50 bucks a third.

i will be going bigger really soon so that is one of the reasons for 5.29's

i ran 33's on my 91 2.4L for about a year and it was the same as losing my O/D, on the highway im still in 4th, but 5.29's and 36's pretty much set it back to stock feelin

my recomendation is 4.56 if you want a good highway gear, or 4.88 for a good round town gear

OK heres a ? for ya   I have no clue what my gears are in the truck, it  had 33" on it when i got it   but from how it drives I don't think there stock. IS there anyway to tell with out pulling the rear apart?    like counting   pinion to wheel revolutions?

yes go look under the hood, depending on year model,  the little tag with all the cool numbers and letters will b either on the inside right fender or firewall,  about a 2"x4"   look for a G292,  which i a 4.10

If you are going 33s, save some money and either find some stock Yota 4.56s or keep the 4.11s you've got now. 4.88 is great for 35s and once I get some true 36s or 37s, then I'll be much happier with the 5.29s

Ya that's what I thought. When I do the axle swap it'll be with 4.88 or 5.29's with 35 to 38's. The tundra's stock reduction box comes with a 2.58:1 ratio. Ya the tires are true 33s, not 305-75R 16 or something. For 1200 to 1300 dollars they had better be true 33s

Bigmike they measure out to be 31.7" tall. and the only reason I got 5.29's is because of the 38.5's that will be coming

i have an 87 pickup with 33's and a stock 22r .. i dont crawl i just use it on the road and in the mud ... i was wondering if neone had an idea of what ratio would work right for me

Tundra with the iforce V-8 should be fine on 33 and stock, my son-in-law is running that exact combination on his and about the only thing he lost was some fuel economy.
