I'm gonna bob my 1st gen short bed next Tuesday night (hopefully).

If you've already got your rear suspension done the way you want it, then take out as much as you can and cut the frame just in front of the rear shackles

I have not even started on my suspension so I am just going to guess as to where my rear shackle will be in the future and make the cut. I want to try to get at least 12" out.

I took 10 inches out of mine.  I cut the frame right behind the double shackle for the chevy spring.  You prolly arn't running chevies so you can cut a couple more inches offthe frame.  and the back of my bed sits inline with the back of my shackles.  You could actually make the back of the bed inline the the edge of the frame.  It would take more out of the bed, but like you said, you don't know were your shackle will sit with the suspension.

when I bobbed mine I used an air chisle to cut the side of it and a sawzall on the bottom half. It worked really good. I also under lapped the sheet metal on the bottom so I could get a better weld on there. I took out 14 inches out of mine and the shackles still were not sticking out. Good luck

I cut 10" out of my 85 runner, that was max for my set-up.  I still needed room for my tailgate, (not an issue for truck) and I wanted the option for longer springs like marlins etc.  Body lift would have allowed more to clear my gate but I dont want one.

Someone should put all these links for bobbing a bed in the tech guides.  That would be a tremendous help when searching for information on the subject   :turtle:

I did use a sawzall to cut my bed.  I think it would have been easier to use an angle grinder with a cutoff wheel.  i used a torche to cut the frame.  And i didn't make those shackles, they came on the chevy springs when i bought them.
