Anyone know about the Tundra 4.6l engine?
« on: Jan 13, 2011, 08:58:58 AM »
Anyone know about the Tundra 4.6l engine?  I'm considering a  2011 Tundra with this engine for a work truck because of the fuel mileage.  I don't have the job yet, but I have my 3rd interview today for it - so it's looking pretty good.  I know it is just a de-stroked version of the 5.7l and has all the same technology, including the 6 speed trans but I don't know any more since this engine came out after I quit working for Toyota.

Are there any easy performance mods for it?

Do these really get 20mpg on the highway?

Can they tow my '85 on a car trailer ok?

I know some of the guys on here are Toyota techs and have experience wrenching on these, so I want to here from them too!

What about the new EcoBoost Ford?  Don't really like the Fords but the engine seems pretty cool.

Ford needs time to prove that engine isn't flawed, and it sounds like he doesn't want a great diesel wrapped in a crappy truck with a bad drivetrain  :dunno:

Hasn't that 4.6L been around for several years, in the previous Tundra? Seems to be pretty well proven over time. IIRC, it was originally a Lexus design which was adapted for use in the (then new) Tundra. From what I hear, an excellent engine. You *might* get 20 mpg under ideal highway conditions, but I wouldn't expect that in typical driving -- probably a few less, depending on how you drive. Should handle your towing needs without any problem, assuming trailer brakes and a balanced load.

4.7 was the bigger version of the lexus 4.0, 4.6 is the latest and supposedly greatest, though I'd rather have the bigger one  ;)

x2

I am very familiar with the lexus/toyota series of UZ (4.0/ 4.3 / 4.7) motors from the older cars and they are wonderfull engines.  I have been working on them since '98 and am very comfortable with my ability to work on them but the new 4.6 is a different series motor.  It is supposed to get 20mpg and that's the real reason I would like one.

I just found out that this job would include a work vehicle which sounds like a panel van all decked out with parts bins and full of parts already.  I guess the 2nd and 3rd guys I interviewed with got their wires crossed somewhere on the work vehicle subject.  If I get this job, the wifey and I will end up moving up to Riverside County and I'll be servicing sterilization equipment in hospitals primarily in the riverside area, as well as the occasional trip to Las Vegas, Orange County, L.A., and S.D.  I've been laid off since October so this would be huge! :shocking:

I guess if I get this job, I'll probably sell off a couple of my trucks and get a '05 or '06 tundra double cab with the 4.7l for personal use since it doesn't look like I'd have the 40cents a mile budget for a work vehicle now.  I'll still keep my '85 though.  I'd also have to get the wife some new wheels since her '06 sentra with 50k mi is falling appart (piece of crap car!).

I've got a lot riding on my 4th interview (yes 4th!) and a face to face meeting with the guy who would be my boss, so please pray for me guys!

Good luck in your interview!  :crossed:

Sorry about the misinformation, I was thinking the smaller current Tundra engine was a carryover and I completely missed 4.6 vs 4.7.

My wife and I have a 2007 Tundra with the 5.7. It gets 16-18 around town if you don't put your foot into it. We have gotten up to 21 on the highway.

Well, I got the job now and have been working for about a month with a leased chrysler mini van they gave me for a work vehicle.  This van is a pile and I'm looking forward to when the lease on this is up and I get to have a different work vehicle.

The big problem now is deciding what work vehicle to get on the Enterprise lease deal they give me.  Unfortunately, this Enterprise lease I have to get in Sept. will involve them taking $100.00 out of each of my paychecks because they say my wife will be insured to drive it.  Why would my wife want to unload all my tools and parts to go get groceries?  I wouldn't want to unload it for her either.....Sucks, but it looks like I'm being forced into it.

So now, I have to decide between the two semi-practical vehicles on the list from Enterprise:  a 2009 mini van or a 2009 Dakota - and I think they are both too small and piles of crap......

My pops got a 2006 tundra with a V8 4.7L.  He gets about 12 city, and about 16 to 17 highway.  Don't pay attention to the specs on the owner's manual, it's bull.

4.6L is just like the new 5.7L

reason for the 4.6 was to replace the old outdated 4.7.
the 4.6 is now timing chain
4.6 makes more power and gets better MPG compared to the 4.7
if you look at the 4.6, it looks just like the 5.7 under the plastic cover

I spoke to a customer the other day with an 07 I believe, and that's almost exactly what he got, 13 around town and 17 hwy.
