I have started my first sas on a 2000 tundra. I have done six sas on mini trucks from two wheel drive to IFS 4wd. Pretty straight forward on the mini trucks. I have picked up a Dana 44 from a 79 Bronco. I have since learned that due to the cast in perches this is not a desireable axle, so I thought I would use the Ford springs and buckets for my swap but I don't feel comfortable notching the frame 2" per side to make this axle work. I had plans of using a mini truck 8" cut and widened with the correct differential drop. I feel I can gusset this axle housing enough to hold up to what I would throw at it so, no issues there just need some axle shafts cut. Now my new problem is I just ran across a Dana 44 Dana 60 set from a 76 F250 for cheap. Already loaded with 4.10 gears and in good shape. I can buy these axles for about what custom axle shafts will cost. This is my dilemma, I like the idea of the 8" out front, being able to switch axle ratios with ease. Chromoly birfs and axle shafts (phase two of build) would be hard to destroy between daily driving and some mud running. Not to mention the brake lines and power steering lines mating up to this axle and mini truck IFS steering box I planned for this swap. I like to build things different from everyone else's stuff. Off the shelf can get boring. Now on the other side of the coin, it is hard to argue with the strength of the 44/60 combo behind a otherwise stock Tundra drivetrain. My question to my fellow Toyota junkies is what would you guys do/like to see?
