I just have to say that Zippo is the man! He finished the Tercel transmission over the holiday weekend.

I was able to replace the flasher relay so that I don’t have hyper flash anymore. I also spent all day Sunday tearing the dash apart and replacing the heater core and installing the A/C parts. It was nice to have a functioning heater for the drive into work this morning.

That thing has ac?

It will soon. I dug the parts out of a wrecking yard car when I first got this thing. It really needed to be installed this summer but I am always so busy in the summer months.

Well the transmission is all back together and installed and is shifting like a dream. When we pulled the old transmission out we saw why 5th gear wasn’t working.

Until today I had never driven this car with a functioning fifth gear. It sure does make freeway driving more enjoyable. I’m gonna run some Valvoline 75w90 oil in it for a week then change it out to a Redline/Valvoline mix in a week. Big thanks again to Zippo. He’s the man.

Now I only have two builds. I guess you could say 3 if you count my bike.
1. Old Blue
2. Diesel Goat
3. Motorcycle
4. Tercel

How many do you have right now Steve?

It sheared or wore through the snap ring alowing the gear to shift back which stripped it. That’s why the large gear looks unscathed.

Do you think it was designed (softer metal) to wear away like that if something happened?

My sister's toyota corona (w50 tranny) did that with the input shaft.    Countershaft wasn't worn at all.

Input shaft is easier and cheaper to replace than countershaft.

No. It’s a problem with the way that the gear is supported on the bearing. When we rebuilt the transmission that we just put in the car we added a spacer that provides more even support and makes it more like the latter model of this transmission that addressed this problem.

How about a recent picture of this thing. Any chance I saw it on I-5 northbound in Oregon yesterday?  I passed a blue one with a mismatched hatch and some Mickey Mouse driving lights on top.

Yeah there is a chance actually. I finished and gave it to my nephew down in Keizer, OR then he didnt want it and sold it. So someone in northwest Oregon got a real good deal on a well maintained Tercel.

All the more reason the next generation is the way they are. Dont put in the hard work to deserve the things they get. Then just pass it along without any thought. I would be furious if I were in your shoes. Not because it's a turdcel but because it was a project you poured your time and resources into and the kid was ungrateful.

Sorry my Gnarls rant is over now.

Yeah I would say that too, but I have a lot of experience with that generation. Each week I teach a new group of 8-12 students in "That age group" and I would have to say that even though they do things very differently, they always surprise me and they give me hope. I knew that when I gave the car to my nephew that there was a very good chance that he would either give it away or wreck it. regardless he needs to have the opportunity to make his own decisions and experience the regret that comes with making decisions. He lost his dad (my brother) years ago to cancer so I felt the need to offer him his first car. I just need to let go of the hopes that I had for him and the car.

Consequences are the best teacher.

I have given away a couple vehicles over time, and some pretty good parts.  It's tough when you have put time into them and you see value other people take for granted but when you give there can't be any strings attached.

He lost his dad (my brother) years ago to cancer so I felt the need to offer him his first car. I just need to let go of the hopes that I had for him and the car.

Pretty sure that is the car I saw. The rack was gone and it had two round driving lights on the roof.

Consequences are the best teacher.

I have given away a couple vehicles over time, and some pretty good parts.  It's tough when you have put time into them and you see value other people take for granted but when you give there can't be any strings attached.

The value is really in your intentions and motivations. The results are not something you can control.

I got a free '81 Escort wagon this year.  Looks like something a nun would drive.  It didn't have spark but I got it running last week.  I have about $40 into it now.  It only has 100K miles on it and it's in really good shape.  They have a mini Weber made in Italy.  Supposed to get 42 mpg highway so I'll probably keep it.  Might do the decent fabed rack and some salvaged hellas on it, maybe find some 15" wheels so I can run better tires.  Not as cool as the Tercel but along the same theme.
