89 SAS suspension help!!!!!
« on: Sep 06, 2015, 12:55:17 PM »
So I recently purchased an 89 pickup with a sas swap. Five inch springs in front with tundra springs in the rear. All in all it sits with about five inches of lift. The pinion angle is pretty bad on the front diff and I was curious if there was anyone out there that had a similar setup? So I could know how much I need to shim the axle( degree or inches) so that it sits at a more healthier angle. Maybe there is some formula that I don't know about that's amout of rotation per inch of lift?? I don't know. All help is appreciated thanks in advance.

What speed do you notice vibration in the front end?  My 89 4Runner has weird angles up front and I get vibration around 30 mph which is faster than I need to go in 4wd so I have not worried about it.

I think there is potential to screw up your steering geometry if you shim to much on the front axle. I could be completely wrong about this though.

There's no vibrations in the front end. I just don't want to start breaking u joints when the suspension gets all torqued out. I haven't thought about the steering  getting messed up but good point. I'll look into that.

You want to worry about your castor more than pinion angle unless your going to cut and rotate the knuckles. If its trailered and you don't go very fast offroad then maybe you can get away with bad castor angles. I'm still unsure of what the ideal castor angle is but I think stock factory solid axle castor was +2 deg but Ive read with large tires up to 6 or 7 deg is good.

X2 for what 84flatbed said. I have 4in sas in my 4runner and rotated axle housing to point at tcase output. I cut and rotated my knuckles. Factory for truck is 2deg and 4runner is 3deg. When looking at driver side wheel that is rotated 2deg clockwise from vertical. I went 1deg extra on factory specs and no scary wobbles running 35" kralwers. I would stick with bad pinion angle which would cause driveline vibes if actually in 4wd moving fast and only breakage if universal pushed to limit versus a bad caster angle.

Can you do a high pinion? That'd help a ton... plus the're stronger. Shimming it to the right degree (5 or so) too much will cause your steering to pull agressively whichever direction your turning your wheel... Cutting/rotating your knuckles is a pain and you'd be looking at a good chunk of money to do it right. Go with a high pinion if you ask me...

When I cut and rotated my knuckles on my old 82 all it cost me was a knuckle rebuild kit and some silicone....and a 30 pack lol. Everything was re-used. And it came out tits.
90'4runner......lots of goodies.
