Rear Main Seal Issues
« on: Aug 17, 2015, 08:27:10 PM »
So about 2 months ago I replaced my rear main seal, torqued all bolts to manufacturers specs and for some reason it is still leaking. When I replaced it I put the new gasket on with RTV. I am wondering if the RTV hurt it more than helped it. Yes I am sure it is oil and not trans fluid, it is leaking from the bottom of bell housing as well as where the clutch fork comes from the side of the transmission. Any idea what the problem could be?

Edit: I smelled the fluid that is coming out that's how I know it's motor oil and not trans fluid.

If it's a 20R or 22R, the rear half-moon plug leaking on the cylinder head looks like the rear seal.............

if its not that half moon on the back of the head u most likely have a groove worn into the crank from the old seal, you can sleeve it to get it by so u dont have to replace the crank.

I replaced that as well a week before I did the rear main seal.
Did you put a dab of RTV on each edge of the halfmoon, where the gasket meets the head?  If you don't, it will leak, even with a new gasket, same as the front.
Also, if you used a generic valve cover gasket(not pre-formed), they can often come out of the groove in the cover on install.

No I did not do this and yes I did use a generic valve giver gasket. Thank you for that I will probably be redoing that this weekend. And this is why I ask questions.

If you don't have a Toyota FSM, this is where you put a dab of RTV with the halfmoon gaskets installed.
