Rear main seal
« on: Sep 26, 2010, 09:00:17 PM »
I hope this isnt too much of a newbe question but my daughters 81 has a rear main leaking.  Am I going to have to pull the motor or can I take care of this with the motor still in?

Are you sure it's the rear main seal?

The rear half-moon plug on valve cover commonly leaks and it looks like a rear main seal................

My clutch is slipping so I am assuming its wet with oil.  That started today on my way home from the trail.

never had a rear main cause my clutch to slip, wud look at the clutch myself, both seal and clutch require you to pull the trans, so get on with it :beerchug:

So from what I am reading by your post is I can change the rear main seal without pulling the crank?  I would think I can pull the trans and oil pan, loosen the main caps, push the old seal out and push a new one in.  I havent been in a Toyota motor since 1994!

You're over comlicating it.  Pull the tranny, pull the clutch/flywheel, pull the cover, replace seal, replace cover gasket, re-install flywheel/clutch, re-install tranny = no leaky

Replace the front tranny seal while you have it apart.

I'm sure we all have tips for ya. Here's one or two. If your doing it by yourself. I'd split the t-case and then pull the trans. It's a lot easier to move around. Another, is to "dig" out the seal around the crank. No need to remove the aluminum housing. Lube the seal sealing area, put grease on the back side of the seal to help hold the spring in and gently tap into place.

From my experience Ive had alot better luck just pulling the oil pan & main seal housing off while you are there and replacing those gaskets as well. then when you reinstall it you just lube up the seal and slide it over the crank nice and easy then bolt the housing back onto the block! just a thought since you are alllllll the way in there, better to do it right

Yup, Yup. This is what I like about this forum instead of the "other" one. Everyone has an opinion and doesn't get ripped for it. Hats off to everyone that helps a brotha out:)
