Bananaclip's 84 Extended Cab Build
« on: Mar 20, 2015, 01:51:33 PM »
This is my official first build thread on Marlin!  I recently purchased an 84 extended cab in pretty good shape for being an east coast rig. I came across this truck about 7 years ago locally and have tried to buy it ever since.  Last week the (original) owner contacted me and asked if I was still interested and this starts my thread. I want to build a solid do it all type rig for the trails and camping here in Wv.

This is a pic of the previous owner (He purchased the truck new)  the day I purchased it......  I thought he was going to cry....

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.  My plans are to first go through the truck remove the interior, fenders, bed etc so I can look for any trouble areas and address them. I want to strip the frame to bare metal so I can give it a fresh coat of paint and go from there. I like to start builds with a clean base.  I plan on keeping a low stance overall combined with some solid drivetrain components. I will be needing some advise along the way because I am a total yota noob!

The truck ended up in my buddies shop for further inspection and repair.   I started with the the floorboards and have all of the new steel cut out and ready to go back in.

with the front exposed I was very happy to find a very solid body

Next was the bed removal for frame inspection.

The frame is in incredible shape :beerchug:

I also picked up some 63's and ordered the ruffstuff Ideal 63 kit.  I will keep posting as I make progress guys.

I've been putting in some serious hours trying to get my toy out of the shop.  I am very happy to say that all the body work and paint is near finished.

New floors buttoned up and primed

Frame is surface rust free and epoxied

front clip and inner fenders epoxied

taped, sanded, and ready for fresh paint!

I plan on converting to fuel injection, swapping in the ifs rear axle, upgrading my brakes/ adding the ifs hubs etc to get the matching width up front, dual cases, 63's/ ruff, 5.29's, 35's, longs, armor .....  I'm just excited at this point to have it clean and rust free   Low and clean is my overall goal.

Alright guy's I've been putting some time and funds into the truck build.  I have made some decent progress that I wanted to share.  I'm also at the point where I need some advise......

I took around 13 inches out of the box.

Cut out the rear suspension and welded in the ruff stuff ideal 63 brackets.  I made a set of springs using ford ranger mains with some yota springs mixed in.  I added u bolt flip kits at both ends.

Ended up going with the all pro high steer kit (marlin was out of stock) and a steering box off a 94.  I installed a mixed ruf pack with my 84 main leafs.

I welded up some sliders over the weekend and finished burning them in this evening.  I will get some more pics up soon.  I need advise on tire size.  She sits perfectly level :yesnod:

Guys I just got my Koyo rear axle bearings/seals and a few other bits in. I'm getting ready to order the rest of the stuff needed to seal up and beef up my axles. Question.......Would you go with a Spartan or Aussie rear locker?  I would love to get an ARB but I need tires and shocks to. Please let me know I am torn.

Spartan all the way. I have heard of very few failures on them. The aussie on the other hand, I don't care for how weak the pins are in them. I have installed a few sets for people that have have had no issues. I have also seen more than a hand full of them fail in a good bind. They just seem a little weak to me.

I run a Spartan and a mate of mine runs a version of the Aussie Locker (we call them a 4wd Systems Lokka here). Had them both on the bench and the Spartan is a much stronger design and easier to install.

No need for a long explanation……. I’m back on the build and it’s getting finished…. Lots of things to report. I tore apart the front axle for a complete rebuild. I trussed and added diff protection and all assemblies are ready to go back in.

While I have the front torn down I figured it was a good time to clean the front frame and weld the shock hoops on.

I plan on hitting everything with some paint then reassemble the front axle.

Got the frame and springs painted up yesterday. I also painted the new sky pitman arm. The 12 inch travel shocks showed up!  Progress.

Yes sir.   I was full steam ahead when this build started. Then lots of life hit me. That brings us to current. I’m full steam ahead again.

So I started the reassemble of the front axle last evening.

I’m really liking this Mobil 1 Synthetic

I ended up setting the bearing load on the driver and passenger side spindles set and the birfields greased and installed last evening. I didn’t get any pics.  I was tired and greasy at 1am when I called it quits. More updated today hopefully.

Poly wipers and rock rings installed

I’m going to sand a bit on the lower caps and all pro arms. I had to give them a few taps with the brass hammer.
