CB.TypeG

This thread will be a build thread for my 83 Pickup. I got it in 2019 for $2000 with all kinds of issues. Knowing how hard it is to find a First Gen in this price range that is actually in good shape, I jumped on it. Boy was I in for it.

Please be patient I want to do this thread properly, it will be a bit as I am strapped for time.

Under Initial Construction(7/16/2021)

[emoji107] The major issues when I got it were:

    Clutch was smoked
Exhaust manifold was cracked and studs stripped
Leaked oil from every gasket and seal
Cab rusted out on both driver and passenger side floorboards
    Seat was wasted

CB.TypeG

#2
The good:
The bed was bobbed well and in good shape as well as the tailgate
Interior was intact (minus seat)
It had almost brand new 33" BFG KM2s
..and most important of all
It's my first Toyota!  :yesnod:

The build was started by first repairing the bads, making it drivable!

CB.TypeG

#4
After it was fixed I began taking it wheelin'!
This was my first time ever wheeling a truck in the narrow muddy trails of the PNW

CB.TypeG

#5
And with learning how to wheel... the dents came

CB.TypeG

#6
But what also came was invaluable experience!
...
And more dents...

CB.TypeG

#7
And then the flop... Got a little too rowdy one night and ended up trying to bounce my little open-diff truck over a downed tree.. That combined with my entirely too stiff ProComp springs (and no rear shocks) lead to a bit of a bounce over and flop onto the passenger side.

CB.TypeG

#8
The cab was wasted at that point, the a-pillar got crunched, the windshield fell out, and since the keys also fell out, the engine ran too long on its side.. which then led to a knock.. which then after 3 more days of hard wheeling, turned into a muuuch louder knock.

CB.TypeG

#9
And those series of events lead me to tear the truck down and rebuild.

CB.TypeG

#10
And when my dumbass gets into a project like this, I dont know when to stop..

So she's down to a bare frame. A huge pile of old parts. And a rather large pile of new shiny parts.

CB.TypeG

This is where I will begin the build. Literally from the frame up..

Lord knows what has possessed me to do a frame up restoration of a damn wheeler.. but that's where I'm at!

List of mods currently being done include:
Rebuilt 22r. Bored .20" over, OEM Gaskets and all other quality parts used (no cheap :pokinit: here)
with a Delta 272 Cam and upgraded valvetrain/rebuilt head
Cab swap from an 81 2WD SR5. Painted with Industrial grade enamel
Chevy 56" Rear springs (to be replaced with 63s once rear bumper is established)
RUFs using Rear 83 Main and lowers from 85 OME pack
Full axle overhauls: seals, bearings, Lubelocker gaskets, and grade 12.9 diff studs
w/ Yukon 4.88 gears, install kits, solid spacers, and a Detroit up front and Yukon spool in the rear.
Front axle gusseted, trussed, and armored
IFS front hub swap w/ Tacoma brakes and line lock (temp parking brake)
SA Rear disc swap
Dual transfer cases with triple sticks

Lots of other things I'll incorporate into this post as I remember/install them

Here's a couple pics of my parts piles *shrug*

*Last post of the initial construction*
Future plans:
Armor, front bumper, rear bumper, sliders, exo-cage style cab hoop
RCV axles
Dual Cases rebuilt and with Marlin Crawler adaptor and 4.7s in the rear case
AllPro remote e-brake
37" tires (not decided on which yet) w/ 15x10 Steel bead-locks

And then constant improvements to improve its reliability and capability. I plan this build to maintain street legality and have the ability to drive it to the places I wheel it if I see fit. I do have a trailer in case of breakages so I do plan for that as just part of wheeling.

This will be my forever wheeler as far as I'm concerned now. I want it to last at least until my 5 year old who says it's "his truck", does finally take the keys from me.

I know there's not much here yet and I might have rushed into this thread, but coming from a forum background in my first build (a 92 Honda Accord), I love the forum format and the fact that, in an err of social media, only the diehards remain loyal to the boards. I know it's a world full of broken photobucket links, but I love the comradery of this board and look forward to participating for many years to come!

You should add dual cases to this list . You got to have dual cases and its a good time to do em , while your messing with the suspension.

Oh and  :worthless:  :D

You're so right I need to do dual cases! I just don't have the funds for it currently what with the adaptor, the crawl box, the front driveline and all that.

Also.. the pics. I'm trying. I have them all in my Google Photos account. I don't quite know how to post them on here  ???

Posting pics has been a struggle for me also. After I figured out photo bucket it went to hell. Now I use imgur. With imgur you can copy and past the share links to post your pics here.

The reason I mentioned the duals, aside from them being so awesome, is that If your doing RUF/63's you'll be doing drivelines anyway and if you go duals later you will have to do them again. I absolutely understand running low on funds though. Hopefully your able to get the pics figured out.

Thanks man that's a good point, I didn't really consider the front will have to be extended for the RUF. Maybe I'll be call around to my buddies and track down a second tcase.

Found a way to post pics through the Tapatalk app.
I'll have the rest of the pics uploaded tonight!

In the meantime. Here's a shot of my garage currently

Garage needed an organize badly if I was gonna be able to take inventory and assess this build's needs.

Also got the frame primed and painted (except where the front welding will occur)

Who needs a lathe anyway... Ugh I'm worried about unbalance but I was pretty tedious about ensuring I took the same amount off the diameter.

The tricky part if gonna be this second one. Which apparently is a different cast? Probably a different year truck I guess.

Much better with pictures  :smokin:. looks like it will be a nice truck when you get it back on the road.

This last time I was into my axle I decided I really need to do Ifs hubs, So much easier to take things apart. The FROR Taco brake setup looks like the way to go but sounds pretty questionable if it will clear 15" steel wheels.

Thanks man, It's been painfully slow progress up until this point as life interferes with in-depth projects such as this money pit... but I'm really trying to focus on doing it once with all the right mods to make it capable, fun, and last as long as possible.

As brakes go, I'm re-doing the whole system to include:
-New 1" Master cylinder w/ Dual diaphragm booster
-New hardline and fittings throughout entire system
-Adjustable proportioning valve
-Temp parking brake line-lock
-V6 Front calipers and semi-metallic pads w/ 96 Tacoma rotors supplied by extended stainless lines
-Economy rear disc swap w/ SA calipers and discs in the rear (my factory e-brake linkage was wasted)

I think that's everything that should effectively put a stop to her whenever I need!

Eventually I'll add the transfer case mounted parking brake as well.. I figured the brand new lines and all will be fine with a temporary hydraulic e-brake setup.

I commend you for your dedication. Lots of work goes into a frame off. Your build is taking a big turn. I can't wait to see more.

Looks bitchin for sure. That's the Toyota body style that started my Toyota addiction.

Finally got the springs bolted up.. Only get about an hour here and there to progress this thing lately.
Ready to assemble those knuckles and wheels, then roll it outside.

Front spring hanger is tacked into place about a half inch forward from stock center to center of bolt holes, it'd be great if I end up not needing to move it again once I get the cab and engine weight on it!

And here's a pic of my other little project I've been working on.. Axial scx10 ii knock off with all kinds of redneck mods
