Sounds like the tach needle might be sticky? I would use some tool and instrument oil on it

And recommend where to buy the oil?

Doing some reading . Might try some tri-flow bicycle chain oil. Since I already have some.

Will update how it goes!

Well. Some progress!! [emoji1430].
On the way home from work today. The gauge never came off of zero. So tonight, I cleaned the copper contacts where the tach screws into the instrument cluster back. (There was still a little factory tape residue left over from when toyota taped these off 41 years ago haha)

And the tach reads again!

Unfortunately still slow to respond to engine speed. And will jump in some spots as is climbs. Like its trying to catch up.

But all I had was some chainsaw chain oil. So I decided not to use it. Lol.

But to be honest . The thing spins super smooth. I can actually blow on the face of the gauge and just the surface area of the needle is enough to catch lift from my blowing and make it move. Same with blowing on the components behind. They'll spin.

Stock ignition or aftermarket?

When I put a MSD in my 86,  I needed a tach adapter to drive the tach.

Aftermarket. I have a craine multispark from LCE. ..

I wondered this, but thought maybe not a cause, since it didn't effect my other tach I had been using...

BUT! I'll try and isolate it out. And see what happens !

Thankyou for the feed back!

https://www.cpperformance.com/instructions/120-8910.pdf

The 8910 is just a coil.

I used a AC-AC transformer I had laying around to put  a fake load on the system.     A old fashioned ballast resistor for a flourescent light might work.

The stock ignition is still used with a MSD.     It triggers the MSD.      But there wasn't enough signal/load in the system to trigger the tach.      The added AC-AC transformer acts like a coil and gives the stock tach enough signal to work.

The tach output of the MSD couldn't be hooked up to the stock tach.    Thus the need for above.

Well did a little troubleshooting and investigating. But to no final success with the tach issue.

One thing I did. Was after looking at a wiring diagram I noticed the stock rpm gauge gets its signal from the black wire off the igniter.

Originally I had the "green" wire from the aftermarket gauge I have been using for years going to the negative terminal on the coil.
So I relocated this to tie in with the black wire off the igniter.

But no difference in tach . Which is currently staying at the 2100 rpm mark. Regardless of engine on or off [emoji28]. And will move with in 200 rpms either way. Depending if I'm revving or idling.

Also. I isolated my FAST multispark, and plugged the stock igniter directly to the coil. .
Thinking that multispark has something to do with it.  But no difference still.

Perhaps there's an issue because my engine(and ignition) are a 22re . And this gauge is from 22r carb era truck?

Agreed! And I'm sure I've read about it before in the thousands of hours I have reading on the yota forums. But ill need to do some digging again.

I haven't had any trouble with my 1980 gauge cluster w/tach and a 1990 22re. I think the 3rz or 5vz swap guys might have to add a resistor for the tach but I've never heard of that for a 22re

In other news.

Wiring of the roof rack has been proceeding.  Down so far. Are the forward facing floods, and Amber lights.

Along with toggle switches on the center console along the top edge of the radio.

I would upload pics. But I've reached my monthly limit of picture uploads it seems.

So ill upload those in a little while .

#738
Did a little camping/ wheeling trip this weekend.

Unfortunately. Got some bad news. Before I ever even got to a trail. My tranny started sounding like a garbage disposal after going up the dirt road to camp. Which was 10 - 15 mph climb the whole way.
So ended up wheeling passenger in my buddies 60 series.  And leaving the chinook as "base camp"

It was an L52 tranny out of an 83' 1st gen.
I know they known to not be great.  Beyond anything past stock tires and weight . Which I'm well above both those numbers . Haha.

Anyone got a W56 they looking to sell?!

I'm in the market! Sooner than I thought!

Probably not designed to run upside down for that long. Powering the antigravity pump for long periods of time might cause the flux capacitor to overheat

Updates . Got a rebuildable core for $100 from a local yard! Its a W-56 B i believe. Because the center plate is steel vs Aluminum.
Really stoked because it'll  mate with a Top Shift T-case (like my trucks 1980 case)

Also! By the wild chance of it! This yard happened to have the Adapter Bellhousing for w56 to mate up with 4.3L !

From Advanced Adapters that sells for $500, I got this one for $150!
So super happy about that.

But here's some pics of the tranny's insides . Looks like I got a busted shift fork for gears 1 & 2 .
And reverse is a little chewed up. Not sure if its bad enough to require a replacement tho.

To be honest, I can't find that gear for sale anywhere anyway tho.  Haha. So maybe I'll keep it

You can fix the reverse gear teeth with a dremel.

Use the small sanding disk as a last stage to polish the leading edge profile of each tooth.

Good tip. Was wondering about doing something like that.

What I dont get though ! Lol. Is why is the 3&4 shift fork like $25  And the 1&2 shift fork $75!

Grinded down my bearing puller to fit and grab onto the 4wd sleeve ..

But in the end what actually worked . Was using my bearing pulling plate from my press to grab the "lip" on that sleeve and then placing the claws of my puller onto the plate. Haha, this is gonna be a tight tear down

Also , apple cider vinegar soaked for at least a few days . Is a good rust remover . Incase anyone didn't already know

Also, I figured out why, my previous pics would upload upside down. Stupid. But, I'm left handed, and apparently the phone with the picture button on the left side is "upside down" even though this doesn't mess up with any other app. I guess I'll be taking pictures like a normal right handed person from now on.
