Well I tried everything I could today to figure out what the mysterious noise was and how to fix it. At this point it is too late and I'm just going to have to run Moab and hope whatever it is doesn't break until after. I trimmed my front fenders the bit back that I needed to prevent the rubbing that was happening with my 37s. I also got my 4xinnovations tube doors put on and took the truck down to the beach with the girl to enjoy the beautiful weather we had today. Finally I replaced my leaking slave cylinder. I was hoping that was the cause of my noise but it made no difference. Needed to be done all the same.

I love running tube doors. I need to make a set for my 4runner. I gave my 3rd gen pickup tube doors to a buddy.

A general rule of thumb for area BFE is a 30 pack per person per day

Went to Walker Valley with my buddies Chris and Jesse yesterday. Status report is as such:

- I have a bad power steering leak from one of the mating flanges on my new power steering box.
- The steering seems to be working alright. Though still not as well as it should be (might have something to do with the leak letting air into the system)
- The mystery noise was persistent all day on the trails then just disappeared after getting back into my truck after getting some Red Robin.

So my plan is to clean up the flange as best as I can with a lot of brake cleaner and then use some "The Right Stuff" RTV to slow down/stop this leak long enough for Moab.

*EDIT* Forgot to add that the power steering is still getting very hot. Don't think its getting as hot as before but still very hot. Don't know if this is related to the leak or not.

Define mating flanges? Do you mean the flared fitting? Or the NPT part? If it is on the flared fitting don't use great stuff, use a single layer of teflon tape on the tapper and tighten down. Greatstuff can not seal the pressures of a power steering system. That is why they use a flared fitting.

If the fluid is hot get a bigger cooler.

It isn't fittings that are leaking. I'm talking about these two flanges.

Id bet that the excessive heat caused the leak.where did you mount your cooler? It's possible that the bolts weren't tight enough to begin with because I never checked them.either way, the leak can be fixed but you gotta get that temperature under control.

Afraid not. It was leaking from the moment I put it in. I just didn't realize how bad it was until yesterday.

There's an o-ring right there, IIRC that o-ring seems to loosen up on you, maybe o-ring is pinched or something,

Well, back to the overheating issue, a lot of what I read says a bigger cooler does the trick.but where you mount it matters too.guys were not having any luck mounting it on the exhaust manifold side

I have my cooler mounted out in front of radiator already. After talking to some people I'm starting to think that the system might not be overheating after all. That power steering just runs at that temperature.

Mine doesn't run that hot. Never has. I have that cooler that Jason posted above mounted in front of my radiator.

I run a ford explored transmission cooler (cause they are like $5 at junk yard) I've never had a heating issue since. Like stated above, that o ring is a common issue. Glad it's working well though!

I'm pretty sure that the system has been checked out by the Toyota mechanic that's going on the trip with us using one of those. Nothing obvious was identified.
