atf cooler for an 86' 4 runner
« on: Sep 30, 2012, 02:22:11 PM »
My runner after swapping to a gear driven case now has the aft temp light every so often. the first time was the way up to loon and the second time was yesterday morning driving up 5 then on the way home twice. so i did some research and all i can find is to install a big cooler for it. so i need any info on which one to get and how or if this will work. :hammerhead:

im not familiar with toyota automatics... haven't seen many of them.

but they are no different than any other when it comes to cooling, get a B&M 70264 cooler, take one of the factory cooler lines and add this cooler in line with the factory cooler (or run it standalone even)

MY question would be why would the transmission care if the t case is gear or chain drive?

because when swapping in a gear drive unit he looses half or more of the trans/tcase volume of fluid.

a very LARGE cooler would be best

Most parts houses will have them. We are using this one on my buddies, so far no problems. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TCI-820500/

did you notice any power increase with a gear driven t case?

Yes and no it depends, when it shifts to 3 it seems to third it tacks a second toget the Rs up but other than that Cruz at about 70 no problem.

well im still rocking an automatic and heard that the chain driven case causes drag which reduces power. just wanted to see if a gear driven case would really make that much of a difference

I went to the gear driven case so i could put the 4.7s in. An you will beslowed down like as if you were in 1st gear on a manuel when you are in low range. With the chain you just roll and have to use the brakes all the time.

I know gear cases are for going super slow. I'm happy how mine does stock. 4 lo and 4.88 is good for me right now.

you can get a decent size cooler at local parts store for about $50. atleast that's what I paid for a 10x6, it's used to cool my after market power steering and I haven't had any trouble yet. (knock on wood)

:rockingout: well put the new cooler on last friday and woke up and went to the con for a day trip. i ran from my house to loon basically to stop for gas but straight there. i will tell you no over heating was happening. Awesome right that is basic alt two hours most of it climbing.   and the cooler is not as big as i thought it was i wanted a bigger one.  ran all day, to little sluice and back out and all the way home...... although i was so worried about my tranny fluid that i forgot about motor oil.  luckily there where some fine yota owners that helped a brother out. thanks to all for the info and knowledge. :rockingout:

Howdy, glad the cooler worked. I had to do the same thing to mine with the stock auto t-case...I bypassed the radiator altogether, works really well. I would swear the POS auto shifts better!

How did you swap to a chain drive? I thought you could only do that on a very certain auto...give us some tech!
Thanks

i swaped to a gear driven case with an inchworm 4cyl auto adaptor. i was kinda wanted to go with marlin but there was no option for the adaptor i needed.  but there is linkage you have to replace in your tranny and more fluid than you used before because you have to take out all these cluches for the chain driven case. but i will be posting it all on my build.

inchworm products are up there with marlin imo. so it was a ton of work to make a auto trans work with a gear driven case?

Not really a lot of work, mostly patients. Inchworm is awesome just to let everyone know. They are right around the corner from me. Jim and Josh have been a lot of help

Cool, Thanks for the reply. There isnt much info around about the swap. Is it pretty hardcore? Did it make that tranny any more easy to deal with? I think in the end a swap to a 5 speed would probably be less money? What kind of $s are we talking about?
I have had decent luck with the auto holding up and it stays cool (now with outboard cooler) on the trail, I just find the shift points are funky.

well the inchwormm adaptor is about 550 but i got it on a deal when i bought my 4.7s so i got it for 400. and you will have to figure something out for a new crossmember to hold everything up. so i think about 650 with new crossmember from bud built and with the 4.7 from trail gear it was about a G total. and i had to buy the gear driven case . so 5 speed would i am guessing would be about 200 - 300 for tranny, then another 75 -150 for t case,  4.7s another 400 computer? if you want to do it right? :toiletwait:
so you are still looking at 675 - 850 plus anything i missed.
i really like the auto so far the only other thing i can compare it to in my life would be a 44 willys manuel that i learned on. my next rig will be a manuel though it will be more of a truggy  :best: but i think that the 5 speed swap would be more labor......
