P/S cooler added
« on: Feb 06, 2008, 08:04:02 PM »
Not real high tech or nothing but it was a cheap mod and we all like pictures  :)

Picked up a cooler at Pull A Part locally in good shape for $9.00. Then took of the factory reservoir from the fender to clean out the 22 year old fluid and get the system ready for some synthetic P/S fluid.

Then found a good place up front for air flow

Used a rubber coated metal grommet to hold the cooler in place and used the factory opening to run the hoses to the steering box and reservoir. I cut a slice with a razor blade in a small vacuum hose the cover the opening and protect the hose from getting cut.

Here is what it turned out with the grill test fitted in place.

A little extra fluid than stock because of the  cooler and synthetic fluid in the system it should give a few years of trouble free service.

I'm curious to know how the Synthetic PS fluid will work instead of ATF in the Toyota system.  Be sure to let us know.

Nice install, you may regret using the PS fluid instead of the ATF like the FSM recommends. My PS pump started leaking a few days later.

Well now I'm scared. It's only been in the system for about five days. My pump had not been leaking as of yet. I may just dump the fluid out and flush the system and put ATF just to be safe. I did not even think to look up in the FSM if the system took ATF.

I would definitely drain and refill it with ATF....anything else can eff up your seals and its not fun to rebuild a box

Got a chance to make a run to the dealership and pick up some Toyota ATF to flush the P/S system  :crossed: that the pump does not start leaking now. It's nice being a TLCA member the discount at the dearliship put the ATF at the same price as the stuff they they sell at the parts house

My bud that works at a refinery says that the only difference between ATF and PSF is the red dye, the smaller bottle, and the bigger price tag.  Don't waste your money on fancy PSF when ATF does the job.

Oh, I once had a customer that tried that synthetic stuff and his seals blew within a week.

Now... when you go full hydro ive heard you wanna switch to full sythetic.. true?
What about hydro assist?

The cooler can off of a ford car at the new Pull A Part yard in the next town. Does not matter what size or shape they have set prices for all parts. The cooler is a aftermarket one they sell at the parts store for about $30.00.At the yard they sell for $9.00  I'm happy with the deal.

ATF is way cheaper for being the same thing in a different bottle. Where I work we even have a few older trucks that use 15w40 for their ps system.

You need to use ATF...thats most likely why its leaking.....
OR

If its leaking at the output shaft you might have nicked the output seal during rebuild (very common mistake)
