Standard S.A.S on Red Solo Truck
« on: Apr 15, 2012, 10:16:07 PM »
I'm Solid axle swapping my 1990 Toyota Pu. I have high steer and everthing on the way. I just got my axle today its out of a 1979 Toyota. I'm putting the axle rebuild kit in tommarow after work.

-So i have got my axle apart and i have one side torn down. Last night i left the axle with the pinion shaft facing down and it leaked out gear oil. I'm guessing there is a seal in the third member that's bad any ideas????

309?  Might want to check that again.  I don't recall Toyota ever offering 309 gearing.  If that 1st gen is a 79 or 80 then it should have 4.375 gearing.  If I were you, I would start looking for another 4.56.  Or, a set of v-6 4.88 rears.

Not all 81s though. My old 81 had 4.10s but its manufacture date was late 1980

I'll have to check the gearing again for him,I have to be wrong its probably not 3.90 if that only came in 81.
And I think we found a 4.10 v6 rear so all we will need is a 4.10 4cyl front hopefully  :crossed:

Calipers yes rotors no. Also depends on what spindle you have. Early spindles has a different bolt pattern then the later ones.

you use fj front rotors i am blanking on the years to get them off of im sure someone will chime in if not when i get in tomorrow i will post up what year the rotors come off of.

You use the fj rotors and then your stock calipers.
nimyad is correct early spindles are different

In late 1981 Toyota changed the design of the front knuckle and rotor. Early and late rotors are different and not interchangeable.  In order to get you the correct part you look at the face of your existing rotor . The early rotors (1979 - 1981) had only the 6 holes for the wheel studs. Axles from 1982 - 1985 have 8 hole rotors, six for wheel studs along with two additional smaller holes.

You said the axle was out of a 79 i recommend if you can find a set of later spindles it will help out alot not saying you cant use the ones you have now but with the later ones you can use a vented rotor that is bigger allowing for more braking force
