Well, I got really tired of the long and heavy 4runner I had built, and I'm kinda bored since finishing daily driver on propane, so I figured I'd chop up the runner and build a truggy using the frame and drive train from the runner.

Here's the build plan...

102" wheel base
1.75" HREW sub frame with skid plates
Toyota rear leaves all around, bilstein dampers
The rear leaves will be reversed for an exceptional departure angle, and so I can link it later without a huge cage hanging off the rear end
22r on Propane, cause it rules!
w-56
stock geared dual cases
worn out 38" SXs
hydro assist
2 seater with just enough room for a weekend's worth of camping

I need to go through and organize my pictures.  More to come

Well, it was a little sad, but the 4runner is all torn down.  Brand new windshield didn't last long, oh well.

Also, scored a free set of FJ60 axles, almost complete, for my 4 wheel steer 1 seat moon buggy build I hope to tackle after this build is all done.  I already have another steering FJ60 axle that I got a while back.

Truck fund just got "sliced" to say the least.  Nina was running around the yard like a crazy dog, and she slammed into a swinging chair with a bolt sticking out.  $600 later I have a fixed dog.

Wow thats a narly cut to say the least. I would freak if my dog did that.

OldGold3VZE

She's real tough, barely even whimpered.  This is the 2nd time since I got her in 2006 that I've had to take her in for an ER visit.  The other time was when I ran her over with my 4runner right in my own driveway.  Bad ass dog to say the least.

HOLY CATFISH!! Nina, you are one tough puppy!

I'm digging the new build. What could possibly be better than too many 1st gens to choose from each morning.....

So I'm basically taking the frame down to the bare essentials, like an F-toy build.  Lots of bracket removal tonight.  This is only the start.

Hmmm....  Or, I could buy a camry for the winter and build a 1 seat mini buggy and do the 1st gen later using an original 1st gen frame, which I also already have...

You got my vote for the single seater idea! Right hand drive with the motor pushed to the left?

If I was to do this, the crawler would probably stay left hand drive, that way I could use my FJ60 axles with the pass offset rear housing.  Or, I could flip the rear housing and have a really diagonal drive line with the right hand drive.  Hmmm.  Also, I'd probably one-link the rear, cause it's different, frowned upon, redneck, and well, just different.

Got the winch all mounted up after replacing the fuel pump in the GFs Jetta.  Tucked it back out of the way F-Toy style.

So, I'm starting to think about the body this truggy is going to have.  I could snag some fenders from the scrap yard, and my friend has bed sides, that being said I could give it a "stock" look, also I have a 1st gen grill and headlight bezels, or I could just use the cab and do skins around tubing for the fenders and bed sides with a custom grill.  What do you guys think?

Oh why did I have to search craigslist?  Now I'm going to pick up an 87 4Runner to use as my other daily driver.  I guess I'm building that buggy!

Just picked this up, so the buggy build will be on hold for a little while, but it will be sick.

1986 SR5 4Runner, rough, doesn't run, straight and rust free, though

Oh whatta feeling!  Got her running tonight after being told it would need a motor.  I'm not sure of the condition, but it sounded pretty good, and held a cold idle.  I love these little trucks!  Here's a video of the 1st and 2nd startups in over 6 years of sitting in a field in Colorado.

Wow, so check out the interior on this thing.  This is after 3 days of cleaning, and power washing the carpets.  Also, the front seats are from my old 88 4runner I just scraped out.

I love Colorado for this.  Just met a friend of a friend from New York that said the trucks that are only 5 years old have so much rust that you can't even take anything apart, just torch it off or let it soak in WD40 for days.  This runner was in a field for 6 years, and the worst part about it is the sun faded topper, soon to be replaced.  Oh yeah, paid $500, score!

Back at it!

I'm way too broke for this hobby, but I have a ton of spare parts, some good metal, and a 1 car garage, so I guess a really basic leaf sprung truggy is in order.  I chipped about 80 pounds of metal off the ass end of this thing, and built a crossmember with shackle hangers to keep the rear really tight.

Check out the departure angle!
