Oh man, that's the new 86 runner I scored for a daily driver, keeping that one for sure.  But, I did also have a clean interior in the 88 4runner with the cage on it that I'm keeping in hopes of scoring an 84-88 cab one day.

Mocking up the engine.  I think it should be about a foot back from stock, less if I can fit the radiator.  And since I'm broke, I would like to try and keep the mnual fan, but I think I'm going to have to put an electric one on this rig.

Also, my old bumper got put to good use on a friend's 86 4runner.

Tore the leaf springs down to just the mains to get an idea of full bump height.  Looks like 24" to the frame on worn 38s at street pressure.  I'll be building a sub frame for the tranny and dual cases, so belly height should be around 20".  Not the lowest, but this is a leaf sprung rig on a stock IFS frame, so I'm cool with that.

And a pic of what everyone's driveway should look like!

Well, only 2 are mine, plus the buggy I'm building.  The red 4runner in the front, and the 4runner without doors or topper are just some friends of mine.  It's just nice to have a little Toy group to hang with.   Plus, your sig says toy obsessed, so I figured you'd have a fleet!  Haha.

This is difficult in a 1 car garage, and with limited tools and help, but I got the drivetrain kinda where I want it.  Thanks to my Dad coming over and brainstorming (he lives in Florida, so this is rare) I was able to use a front driveshaft with a double cardan joint on the rear.  The motor is a few inches farther back from where I had originally thought it would be, but if I need to I will just modify the shifters, plus, this gives me plenty of room for headlights and a grill in front of the radiator.  I really wanted the seats to be centered in the chassis between the axles, and so far everything is looking like it's going to work out.

Oh yeah, well you know the price of the real ones was just too much for this budget build!  Those are just to mimic the full leaf pack since I'm mocking this up and "full bump".

Subframe all mocked into place.  I have some rear driveshaft bind at full droop (maxed out with the hi-lift) but I think it will be OK cause I'm gonna rotate the 3rd up a few degrees.  Might also consider a high pinion 3rd for the rear, but I'm trying not to spend much on this build, so hopefully the rotation works.  I could also throw a center limit strap on the axle.

Haha, thanks.  It's literally all scrap I had laying around.  All the tubing for the subframe is from the 4runner cage, and the plate is just some mix and match 1/4" I had from building a winch mount.  I've even got a sweet chunk of diamond plate in there!  So far, I'm only into this for consumables and electricity.  Hoping to have the motor mounts done later this week, then seat mounts, then start on the cage.  I might do the firewall and pedal assembly before I do the cage.  I've never built anything like this, so I'm kinda figuring it out as I go.  Also, starting the new job today!

Why no flatbelly?

1.  I moved the engine back a foot and the rear axle forward about 6", so I have to use a really short rear drive shaft.  Due to the Toyota rear output being so high, I couldn't get the angle to work with a flatbelly

2.  If I did a flatbelly, the front output off of the transfer case would have caused me to have to build my floor really tall to fit a passenger seat.

3.  With my leaf spring setup, the absolute lowest I can get the frame rails is 25", so a flatbelly would have given me a 25" belly height, way too tall if you ask me, and unnecessary with the right amount of skid plating.  Look at any buggy built from scratch, they always have a subframe with about a 19-20" belly height.  I'm at 20" roughly right now.

4.  I do not want my roof above 6 feet tall at ride height, so the subframe was necessary.

Gotcha! Are you going to make the crossmember removable or are the cases coming out the top?
You'll never take me alive

OldGold3VZE

Coming out the top, and the seats will be mounted double-shear with pins for quick removal.  I just got done adding more tube to the sub frame to give a "slider/boatside" effect.  I'll get more pics up when it's all done.  I feel like with the IFS frames this is a good route.   I think I'm really gonna love this new 2nd shift work schedule, I just need to be careful about working in the garage too much before going to work until 2am.

Added some more cross bracing to the subframe to give it a little more of a slider/boatside effect.  UHMW is really expensive, so I'll probably leave the gaps open, but I'm not worried, the bottom is totally flat.

Here's a not to scale idea of what I'm shooting for.  The only real out of balance dimension of the sketch is the distance from the A to B pillars, it looks a little long in the sketch.  Otherwise, this should be about what I end up with.  Based on my very rough estimations, I should be able to keep the roof height at or below 6' at ride height, and have about 3" of up-travel in the front and 4" in the rear.  Since I'm using stock Toyota leaves all around it won't be the most hardcore flex machine, but it will be simple, reliable, and very easy to repair.

I feel ya on that.  The last motor I built was in January here in Colorado.  It went into my way old truggy with no body or glass, and to test it out we were ripping donuts in my friend's field at 2am!  That's the same motor than now lives in my red 1980.
