torsion bar removal
« on: Apr 07, 2012, 06:44:05 AM »
I need to know how to get these off. I was told to loosen the torsion all the way. it doesn't seem like there is an end to their bolt. i am about to just cut it off. any help would be great

are you removing them to sas the truck? or put diff torsion bars in?

are the ront wheels of the truck of the ground?
this will make the m easy to loosen then they will slide out o the ront mountonce the rear bolt is backed out the hole way (whick is a long ways)

Get the front wheels of the ground so there isn't any tension.

I would recommend if you are just replacing the springs, to get new nuts and bolts, incase you break a bolt off.
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

At least get one new bolt and nut from the dealer(dealer only and not always in stock), I always seem to break one.  They are a fine threaded bolt so it takes a lot of turning by hand.

If you are replacing them, or replacing the control arm bushings, either count the the thread, or mark the head of the bolt and count the number of turns so you can set the same amount of preload on them as you have now when you reinstall them.

hey thanks for all the info. This is to take it apart for an SAS. And well i all ready have everything but the upper A arm that is connected to the torsion bar. The arm is resting on the bump stop on the frame. i lifted it with the jack and tried to loosen it. still nothing.
If i took the bolts out that hold the A arm on the frame whats going to happen?

I was also able to get some oxygen and cut the torsion bars off i don't know what i was so worried about.  ha, i guess i popped my cherry.  i also cut of all the ifs crape i needed to and cut the hole out for the frame tube. Working from the floor no work bench. i got my vise and everything else on the ground. loving every minute of it.  these are all things that are getting built after the yoter is out.  I am person that likes to be prepared for things but since i have never really done a project to this size before. there has been sometimes two trip or more a day to get something that i need or get something that i ran out of.  it drives me crazy.  :hammerhead: :smack:
