Torsion Bar removal question????????!!!!!!!!!???????????

Anyone know if the torsion bar can be removed from this outer sleeve, or does it have to be cut out?

you can remove it.  Either unbolt the nut that you see in the pic or take a hammer and hit the housing and it will slide out of the torsion bar.  If you just want the torsion bar then just use the hammer.
1986 Toyota 4Runner 22re 5spd transmission and dual transfer cases (4.7’s in the rear). E-lockers front and rear.

The bolt is for adjusting the tension. The bar is splined in the end tube. Just smack it around it is just stuck.

I see it is no longer in the truck :thumbs:

If it don't come loose, take a torch and QUICKLY heat the sleve. that will do two things. It will cause the sleve to expand and loosen from the bar and will break and any rest loose making it easier to get out. Don't spend too much time heating as if the heat starts to soak into the shaft it will also expand and effect the temper / tinsel strength.

Another question...on the left torsion bar in the pic, is that "yolk" splined also, can it be popped off of there, or is it a press fit?

Yeah, but are there splines under there, is is a standard bar with splines on both sides, or is there some kinda flare or something under there?

Well I was super happy when, just like yall said, the ends popped right off and they were splined on both sides...then my hope and dreams were dashed when I realized, they aren't the same splines on both sides.  What, are these things tapered to be progressive or something...nothing is ever EASY!

Yeah, your torsion bars are pissing me off, not your fault though, I blame toyota.  All the splined areas are in good shape though, I appreciate you getting these out here to me.

not sure how u can make a sway bar outta the old torsion bars but i guess i'll have to turn in and see. :headscratch: I just threw mine in the cab for a set of beaters
