XJ is a unibody they make a good trail rig but if you go beyond the limits you can bend them. The nice thing is they come with a front straight axle but that unibody is the downside. The first thing that will happen and is a tell-tale sign is when the windshield crack happens and it will. I have considered an XJ and the main thing that has kept me from getting one is the fear of bending it. There is a lot of things you can do to help prevent it but when I can pick up a 4Runner and build it for less I always go for the sure thing plus the build even if you SAS an IFS rig ends up costing less.

The new issue of 4 Wheel and Off Road has a nice article on replacing XJ suspension and other after market upgrades. You can probably read it online on their web site.  http://www.4wheeloffroad.com
