1979 toy 4x4 carb issues??
« on: Mar 30, 2011, 04:58:03 PM »
ok here we go, 79 toy 20r 4x4 m/t, "black edition" all options except sunroof, she has 95k orig miles, she has a really rough idle, actually she won't idle with the air cleaner off it, i have rebuilt the carb, and tried to adjust it, checked timing (good), checked egr (works good) actually took it off and cleaned it!
it does run better at 2-3k without it hooked up, checked the fc solenoid (12v switched on) works good, i'm about done with it but maybe someone here has an alternative, maybe something they did and fixed it (the same problem)
please please help, or does anyone have a carb they can sell!

You might check your pickup gap in the distributor, that can make a rough idle.

I finally got my 20r carb to idle OK after a rebuild and adjusting according to the book.  You back out the screw on the right (idle mixture) untill you can't get any higher rpm and then drop the rpm back down using the screw to the left.  I'm sure you've been though that all ready.

It wouldn't idle below like 2K before the rebuild.  Now it idles fine at about 900-1000 rpm.  It's still what I would call a little "lopey", but it runs great and 20 mpg.

if youre not where smog is an issue toss that stock 190 cfm carb in the trash and either install a stock 22R carb 320 cfm,  or a weber 325 cfm
