Just ran to the store for a pack of smokes.... headlights killed the battery driving into town.  Had to get a couple of guys to push me off.  I think the ground wire to the alternator may have a bad connection, or could be broken under the insulation.  If it's not a simple fix, I have a spare alternator.  Other than that and the 2K RPM idle from the throttle cable being a bit tight, she hits the road just fine.  The W56 I was so proud to find has a noisey input bearing. :smack:  I didn't hear it when I was running an open header.  The noise isn't too bad, the trans should last a while before it needs a rebuild.

That day was her first time behind the wheel.  But it's been Everyday since!  The kids were wanting a golf cart or ATV to ride around in.... I put 'em in the Yota.  Anything else would cost more... and what can they hurt going 1/4 mile per hour in double-low 1st gear 2WD?  :)

Thanks.  Where everything ended up was kind of an afterthought.... from my measuring, I thought I'd just have to notch a ~3" square for the receiver to poke thru.  It turned out OK... the crossmember tube sits a fraction of an inch from the backside of the rear valance.  I suppose I could clean up my sheetmetal cuts a bit.  I hacked off the frame a couple inches behind the shackle so I didn't have the open "C-channel" to weld the 3" toob inside.  I butt welded the 2x3" to the back of the bobbed frame and plated it with 1/4" steel.  I really need to cut into one of my welds and see how well it's burned in.... using a $150 110V flux core mig that I picked up to use on the bed bob... for heavy jobs I've always used a Lincoln 220V arc with 6016 or 7018 rods.

My only updates are a couple of seat covers (robbed from a trade-in at our dealership) and some hi-res pics.  I've put a little over 400 miles on my daily driver since putting it on the road.

Some close-ups of my 14" bed bob body work....

I have a lead on a set of almost new 32x11.50 BFG A/T's for cheap.

That looks great!  Maybe mine will turn out that good.  It's been several years since I shot acrylic.

I'll use hardener.  3 coats, thin the last coat out a little more to get it to lay smooth.... crossing fingers!  But then... A slick paint job will bring out all of my bad body work.  So maybe I don't need to try to get the paint perfect!

Took an old Ford 4x4 in as a trade-in today.  It's rough and rusted out.... but it had a practically brand new set of 33" M/T's on it.  Paid the mechanic next door $5 a tire to dismount/mount and balance.  $40 for an almost brand new set of skins!

Decided it might be cheaper/easier to just bomb the 'yota with spray cans, instead of buying primer/paint/thinner/hardener, and a decent spray gun.  After going thru 5 spray cans and only getting about half done... I think I may have made a bad decision!

Thanks y'all.  The paint is going on real smooth and looking decent.  Boy, a smooth coat of paint sure brings out dents and my bad bodywork.  I need to buy a couple more cans to do the hood and tailgate.

Thanks!  Just gotta lead the wet edge like you would with a gun and sling on several coats.  My "spray finger" has been numb for several days!

After partially rebuilding and cleaning my stock carb, I was still having problems with erratic high warm idle... I couldn't figure out what was going on, so I pulled all of the electric and vacuum choke gadgets and springs off of the carb.  It idles and runs awesome when warm.  The cold morning starts have been kinda rough the past couple mornings with temps in the 40's.  I swapped over to a manual cable operated choke today.  I'll see how it works tomorrow morning.  If it works, I'll post pics.  If it doesn't... back to the drawing board....

Wow!  Thanks man!  Not so sure I'm doing anything right, but I'm trying!

I bought a spool to install in either the front or rear.  Since my rig is seeing a lot of daily driving, I think I'll put the spool in the front.  I want to pick up a Lockright in a few weeks (when I have mamas permission :smooch:).  That'd probably serve me better in the rear axle.

Cleaned up the old skool Smittybuilt double toob front bumper.  Kinda wish I had the matching rollbar to go with!

Gonna try to get my spool set up in my spare front 3rd member this weekend.  Still haven't decided which axle gets the spool.

Dude, looking sharp.

Thanks Bro!

I've been DD'ing the crap of of this truck.  It doesn't miss a beat... it has the reliability of a ... well, a Toyota!  Loaded 'er down with a trailer and 600 lbs of scrap iron.  (some of the leftover parts from the 2 trucks that made my 1st Gen).  It pulled it!  I didn't break any speed limits, but it got there!

I always love seeing these trucks still being used like people use there full sizes and you cant go wrong with a spool in the front cuz you can always unlock a hub to gain better steering and still street the truck if its your DD

FYI, a 1st Gen cab weighs 380 lbs.  Worth about $30 at 8 cents a pound.

My goal when I started this project... a truck that could handle daily duties and handle trail duty, also.

The spool is still a paperweight on my desk.  I think I'm gona try it in the rear axle.  If it doesn't get it for a daily driver, I may end up sticking it in the front axle.  I've daily driven with Detroits and EZ Lockers.  I know how they work.  Pretty much a spool if you're on the gas, at all.  A spool will drive about the same, without the popping and clicking.
