Gearing question
« on: Jun 26, 2010, 09:17:03 PM »
I have a question for you guys and gals.  Has anyone or is anyone running 4.88 gearing with 35 inch or lager size tires was just wondering how your set up is treating you.  Im on the fence on what I want I plan on running 35's soon I might in the future run 37's but thats far into the future.  It is my daily driver  so I want to know what the best set up will be.  Let me know how you guys like your setup

im currently running 5.29's with 33's and its annoyingly low geared i dont like running it faster than 50mph due to high rpm's and thats in 5th gear a 4speed would really suck but its great on the trail and i plan on 35's in the neer future and i think 35's and 5.29's will be great. my :twocents:

dude, i dont know what you call high RPM's but i run my truck between 1000 rpm and 5000 rpm and have for the past 15 years (ok its not the same engine but THIS engine has been in there 6 years)  my original 20R was driven the same way and it lasted till 297,000 miles.

I almost never shift before hitting 3800.  and according to old literature provided in the 80's from Toyota the 22R was designed to shift at 3600.

I regularly run down the interstate at 4000 rpm in 4th gear for the simple reason that requires about 1/3 less throttle than it requires in 5th to maintain the same speed.

About 7yrs ago I ran 35's w/4.88's behind a mod'd 3.0 5-spd and I really didn't care for the loss of power, as compared to the 33's.

If you have already re-geared to 4.88's it would be livable and a lot better off than 4.10's, if you haven't definitely go w/5.29's.  That is what I have in my '91 and I wouldn't want anything taller, it is slow enough as it is w/a new engine(less than 5k after a complete rebuild).  If you are running 33's and don't plan to upgrade to 35's before the 33's are shot, 5.29's should still be fine.

Check out these Auto Calculators & Marlin's Transmission Gear chart and punch in the numbers.  Over all performance will also very on how heavy of tire/wheel combo you are running, how much weight you carry, etc.

All I know is that my exhaust starts to resonate and get loud around 3500 rpm.

So I'd try to avoid 3500 rpm at your normal freeway cruise speed...............

Punch in the number and you will have the results.

5.29's are a little over geared(about 3%) for 35's but they are the closest gear set that will put you the closest to the factory performance of 28's and 4.10 gears(w/a 5-spd), however given the heavier rotational mass of the 35's, the slight over gearing is basically insignificant.

If you are still running 4.10's it would be foolish to re-gear to 4.88's if you are going to be buying new gears.  If you are trying to save money and have a line on a set of 4.88 diffs, they would be a better choice than running 4.10's, but you would be better off finding/waiting for 5.29's, especially if you might go to 37's at a later date.
