Mog Portal Axle On 1996 Tacoma Gearing Question
« on: Apr 09, 2012, 11:50:10 AM »
I'm planning on putting mog portal axles on my 1996 Tacoma.
I have been reading this write up about the HULK http://www.bc4x4.com/fv/2002/hulk/

They had to put a transfer case in backwards in order to get the gearing acceptable for the highway.
The "portal hub gear ratio yields an overall axle gear reduction of 7.56:1".

Even if I put on 44 inch tires, at 2500 RPM I'm guessing my top speed will be around 43.3 MPH.
To go 60 MPH the RPM would be up around 3463.9.

Does it make sense to try putting a transfer case in backwards on my Toy?

Thanks,
Rob

thats not somthing you are going to be able to do with toy parts unless you have some serious serious custom work done. Best bet is to call OTT and see what they say

I found this calculator and it changes my estimated rpms to go highway speed a bit. http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

Stalk
My tranny is: R150F
Tcase: 2.57 low range
Axle: 4.10

With 7.56 axle
Tire 44"
5 the gear has me at 2910rpm to go 60mph

That would be reving a bit but red line shows 5500 so it could work.

Thanks for the suggestion IronClad I'll check it out.

I found this overdrive option. http://www.high-impact.net/transmission_and_gear/rangeroverdrive.htm

It looks like it would work, from a numbers point of view at least.

"5th gear has me at 2910 RPM to go 60 MPH"

The Ranger provides 27% overdrive so:
2910 x 73% = 2124.3 RPM to go 60 MPH

That seems more usable.

If we are talking about a Toyota engine the 2900 or so RPMs at 60 turning huge tires with massive rolling resistance is probably just about right.  I would build it like that and run it before I started hunting for a way to get higher gearing.  I have run 32s and 33s with 5.29s, which is a bit low and it was great on the highway.

Yes, the engine is the 3.4L V6 with supposedly 195 stalk horsepower. Red line is around 5500 RPM so I was more concerned about gas millage but as you say it shouldn't hurt it at 2900 RPM. I may just give it a go as you say. Thanks for the feedback it is very helpful. I find the stalk gearing a bit high, especially first gear so this may just be the best solution. :)

Thanks for all the feedback. When I get around to ordering parts I'll set up a build page. I have a bunch of before pictures I'll have to organize and upload sometime.
