people on the rubicon
« on: Jun 13, 2010, 04:28:00 PM »
on our way out heading towards loon lake memorial day weekend, we came up on a guy in a 4runner who had a broken front u-bolt.  he couldn't move it out of the way without destroying his front end, so we waited around for the rest of our group to catch up because we had a an onboard welder.  while hanging out with the guys in the 4runner waiting, a group of 3 jeeps came up the trail heading in.  they had a sticker on the windshild that said "Extreme offroad" if i remember right.  anyways, these guys were supper arrogant and were trying to get us to drag it off the trail, or they were going to do it for us.  after telling them we couldn't move because it would break the other u-bolts and ruin the front end, and also telling them we had a welder on the way to fix it, the guys just got worse and worse.  our group didn't even know the guys in the 4runner, but i would expect that its common curtousy to stop and help someone that is broke if they need help.  after the guys cussing us out and yelling at us to get out of the way, one of them had the nerve to pull out a knife and start threatening us.  thats when our group just walked away and waited for our other 5 rigs to get there.  once they were outnumbered 6 to 3, then they backed off and waited.

its people like this that cause problems and give offroading a bad reputation.  i'm trying to find out where exactly the "Extreme Offroad" guys are from and personally call and give them a piece of my mind.  its just really upsetting to me.  just needed to vent a bit.  i just posted some stuff up on pirate and got the usual arrogant people replying back and throwing in there two cents and it kinda reminded me of the people we ran into.  anyways, thanks to those of you who are not jerks, and those of you who might be, be careful who you threaten.   :kickbutt:

I have met people like this.  There have been times I would have liked VERY much to remind them the taxes they pay keep some of us young men very well trained at slipping through the dark armed to the teeth unseen.  There are some people I would love to pay a visit to one dark night.  Superyota hit the nail on the head, be careful who you threaten.

Well if he had pulled a knife on me he would have found out what it is like to bring a knife to a gun-fight.  :shake:

A couple years ago we had a truck roll in the middle of the trail mostly due to an idiot like you discribed. Even with the trail blocked he was getting through no matter what, tryed to say he was with the FS patrol. Got real beligerant with us. People trying to come up behind us got pissed it took us 30 min. to get a fullsize Blazer back on its wheels when it rolled on a hill sideways. Some people just don't understand a thing about gravity and what would have happened if we just tryed to flop it back over. In the end we got it into a position to flip it uphill so that it wouldn't just roll back over and down the hill.

same with me. have been on a few runs where i left early with a few others to help them get their rig off the trail back to their trailer or home.

as for the guy pulling the knife, yea bad idea. never know when you will run into somebody that is armed and know how to use their weapon. and some wonder why i have a CCL and always carry.

x2. actually all of our group has ccw's.  but that probably would have made matters worse if they would have known.  good idea to keep it concealed until you have no other option.

exactly.

I've had this happen on the trail, not to the extent of pulling a knife, but having a guy drive around (and hit) my truck.  Took pictures the whole time, let him go on his way, and reported it to the FS as soon as I saw a ranger.  I showed him the pictures on my camera, including the pictures of his license plate, and he was more than happy to take care of it.

They wound up hitting him for driving off the trail, reckless driving, open container, and leaving the scene of an accident (the last one kind of made me laugh).

hmmm. i wonder if its too late to call the leo's or fs and make a complaint.  i think i have their license plates in the pictures too.  i have to check.

It's attitudes like that that make us as off roaders look bad in the eyes of the general public. What a bummer that it came down to what it did, but I'm glad you guys all got through it without anyone getting hurt or making the general off road population look worse. Glad ya'll got the guy rollin' too!

Its stupid to make any threat against someone's life on the trail.  Everyone from every background wheels.  Cops and Military included.  If you threaten the wrong person things can go south real quick.  Bold move by them if you ask me.

Move out of California and it's easy. If you live in a state that allows concealed weapons, you can get a Utah permit which allows you to carry in over 30 states. Then you can carry anywhere but a federal building, a bar, or a bank.
