3.4 conversion. I have questions!
« on: Mar 13, 2010, 04:50:08 PM »
OK i have been around yota's for a long time. Always ran the 22re's. I am starting a build on a new buggy. Wanting to put the 3.4 in it. Trying to figure out what my loose ends are to make this work. I can pick up a 3.4 tomorrow if i choose to. Looking for the most cost effective way to do this.

I HAVE:

23 spline turbo tranny.
21 spline crawl box mated to a dana 300 t-case.  (i know i need the 23 spline input gear to go into  the turbo trans.)

What do i need to make this stuff work with the 3.4?

Any help, links, or suggestions i am open to.

Thanks in advance.

You'll need all the clutch stuff for the 3.4 engine, and an R150 bellhousing to connect the R151 trans to the 3.4 engine.  Depending on which side of the engine you want the crossover exhaust pipe to dump (factory is passenger drop), you will need a bellhousing from either a 3.4 5-speed (clutch slave cylinder on the driver side) or a 3.0 5-speed (clutch slave cylinder on the passenger side).  I don't believe anybody has been able to have their exhaust and clutch slave on the same side.  The bellhousings both have the same bolt patterns, but I believe the 3.0 bellhousing is about an inch shorter, so the pivot point for the clutch fork will have to be modified if you go that route.

Hope that helps.

Sorry, that is a bit confusing.  I don't think you can use the 3.0 bellhousing with the exhaust in the factory location, as it will interfere with the clutch slave cylinder location.  The stock crossover pipe can be flipped to either side by simply cutting it and rewelding it how you want.

So with the stock exhaust you'd have to use a 3.4 bellhousing, and with a flipped exhaust you'd have to use a 3.0 bellhousing.

There is a lot more information to be found over in the 3.4 swap section of yotatech.  Probably not many buggy builds, but there is good information about the engine itself.
