I've beat my brains out on this topic for the last two years.  I too am very displeased with the whimpy power of the 3.0L V6.

My searches have come up with two solutions:
#1 Swap the motor for a 4.3L GM
#2 Swap the motor for a 3.4 Toyota

Advanced Adapters has the stuff to swap to the Chevy motor.

I am swaying towards the Toyota 3.4.  Off Road Solutions has the necessary kit to make the swap http://www.offroadsolutions.com/

Started wheelin' in 1976 when I bought a Scout II new off the lot.  I've since switched to Toyota.  I like rigs that I can travel in and still take off road.
Small tires = bigger challenges.

Either 4.3 or 3.4 you will be happy both ways. You can always smog leagally (if that applies to you) supercharge the 3.4l, and since its Toyota and has the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the 3.0, you can use your stock drivetrain without any modifications

I've done a lot of work to the 3.0 and spent a lot of money doing so...

You likely will not be able to get the power you want...  and for the price of all the go-fast parts you'll throw at the 3.0, you can do a 3.4 swap.

I've also done a 4.3 TBI...  I actually like the 3.0 better...  :gap:  :gap:

i too have the 3.0 v-6 with 5.29 on 35" tires, the best thing to start with is the intake & exhaust  after that its up to you and your wallet, :drooling:  i think ive pushed the 3.0 to its limit im getting 248hp at the rear wheel but ive also put over $15,000.00 just into the motor  the only problem with all the extra ponys is that dam smog thing i have to swop out motors every other year damd tree huggers

The BEST way to get more ponies out of your 3.0 is to call offroad solutions and put a 3.4 in it.  The 3.0's are notoriously underpowered, and no matter what you do to them, you cant get any decent power out without putting in major coin.  A good running 3.4 in stock form is WAY more powerful than a modded 3.0.  I've put several blowers on 3.4's at work and they absolutely haul ass!

I drove a stock 3.4 today in a customers Tacoma with STOCK 4.10's and a 6"lift and 35's and it was still peppy.  Try that with your 3.0 0-60 takes like 2 weeks.  The 3.4 is a really well designed motor with no major issues and is in my opinion simpler to work on as well.  As BigMike said, it'll also bolt into your truck!

I've never had too many problems, you just have to adapt your drivng habits.  I went from a 360 to the 3.0, and it took a littlw while to adapt, but it is fine now

Dude if you dont have the money or just plain to want to go through the hassel of an engine swap this is what I would do

Headers
Exhaust system (with high flow mufflers and cat)
OverSized valves
Mild cam
Air intake
Igntion upgrade
Venom 400 module

Problem with that is you'll spend more $$ on this than you would for a budget swap...
Headers: $500-700
Exhaust: $250-500
Headwork: $1200 from DOA
Cams: $300 from DOA
Air intake: $100-250
Ignition: $100-400
Venom: $350

So you're putting between: $2800 and $3700 into a 3.0 that will put out at most what the 3.4 puts out stock..

Even using AOR's SuperKit, you'll be spending in this range for a 3.4 ($1800 for kit, I've seen COMPLETE 3.4's for $1500)...  And the 3.4 will get better mileage.

Just my thoughts.

The best thing you can do for your 3.0 (assuming you want to keep it), is make sure it runs smooth, and efficiently. I could build you a list of every oftermarket item for your engine, but in reality there are only a few things I would do. Definently headers from Downey and exhaust. Noticable increase. K&N intake system. Clean your injectors, and have the intake ported and polished. These mods will give you the most bank for your buck. After this point, your cash spent, vs. horsepower gained becomes asymtotic (sp?). That's all assuming that you want to keep the 3.0. I'd personally go to a 3.4. Realisticly the 3.4 swap will cost around $4500. People will say that they saw everything you need to do the swap for under $2000, but that isn't everyday, everybody, realistic. You'll need engine, wiring (custom unless you are a wiring god like bigmike  ) and computer, custom exhaust, move everything to other side of vehicle (tacos are reversed, so Battery is on driverside, intake is on passenger side, etc.), you get the idea. Plus "while your in ther," you'll inevitably find something else you'd like to do. This will cost you money.
Even though it costs alot of money, I still think this would be the best swap. Either that, or live with the 3.0 as it aint gonna get much better.

A friend of mine and I put a s/c 3.4 into my 93 a few months ago.  Even with the s/c, I get better gas mileage, and there is power anytime I step on the gas.

Big money involved, but a big improvement.  Buy a wrecked rig, and then you will have all the parts you probably won't think of getting or needing.
