more power for my 85 yota
« on: Apr 08, 2006, 10:08:28 PM »
Hi I have a 1985 extended cab 4x4 with 33's and a 4inch lift and an Automatic Trans.  I was wondering whats the best way to get some more power out of the 4cyl motor.  I have already put 2 1/4 inch exhaust from the cat back with a magnaflow muffler.  Anything ideas.

                            Thanks, Justin

Sure a cam will get you a bit more power but the reason we all love 22r/e's is baecause they are so indestructible and a cam will take away from that. Remember its a 4 banger so power will never truly be had without a ridiculous amount of money. And please don't get a K&N, they let so much crap into your engine you don't wanna know. If you can find a foam style air cleaner that would be the best of both worlds in a sense (airflow and filtration).
Headers never hurt anyone though :)

I get the distinct feeling that people just don't oil their k&ns enough!  I have had less gunk going through the intake on my 91 22re now with a k&n than before with stock filters.  Problem is there's a fine line between correct oiling and over oiling, ask me how I know!

Hey man, a BIG power diference is the swap from auto to 5 speed. I did it an now I gots lots of umph. Also a Intake set up, new plugs, header. I am getting a msd box. I have the wires and coil. I noticed I had better acceleration in high rpms with the coil change. but if you dont floor it a lot i would keep the stocker.

AS I have come to understand it, an aftermarket iginition system such as MSD will outperform stock, but the OEM toyota system will by far outlast aftermarket and be more reliable. Its a balance between performance and $$$ I guess.
