Good day,
I am in need of bit of a "why question" When i got my 84 toyota and spend the next month fixing it up and finally going for a drive in it testing the 4x4, the trasnfer case shifter is on the left and so is the transmission shifter..
How annoying, you can only stay in 1st in 4L, unless you pull it out and squeeze the shifter down and around and then put it in 2nd, then back into 4L...Ohhhhh and if i have to back up :hammerhead:!!!! ha ha wait for it...wait for it...if i needed to get out of a situation fast...NOT :tantrum:!!whats up with that, i figure 2 very different year components. any idea what years'ish. I believe its a gear driven case.

sounds like someone put the tcase shifter in backwards, unscrew the shifter knob, then take the rubber boot off around the tcase shifter then the smaller boot thats around the base of the shifter, under that smaller boot is a type of a c clip, remove the c clip then the shifter will come out of the base, flip the shifter 180 degrees and re install

You can also bend your T-case shifter.
Pretty easy actually.
But yes, remove it and put it in the vise.

Maybe should mention that the upper section of the shifter will melt off the lower section if you use to much heat. I was careful and still used way to much heat so i rtv'd it back in place.

Coyote's idea might hit it closer on the mark though.

If there is no c-clip, you have to push the collar down and rotate it to remove it.

Take the T-case shifter out, turn 180 degrees and re-install, problem solved. How do I know, I did the same thing. :hammerhead:

X2

you've got it installed 180 degrees out. the easiest way would be to unbolt it and just rotate the plate and stick it back in.
lets not and say we did.

Its weird gettin one back in. Mines backwards, I tried like 5 times, but kept puttin it back in the same way. It should sit way to the right. It didnt look right until I saw another truck. I can shift into all my gears, but sometimes in 4lo, its hits 2nd, and pops it out. Ill fix it when i get around to it....

So i pulled it out and put it in the other way and i can not shift into reverse now and in 2H i can not get 4th or reverse, the shifter is in the way, WTF!!!!

I have a transmission and T-Case from an 85 and both are different than in this truck, the shifters are further apart than on this truck so i could not use any shifters from the 85, what is all the difference?

Looks like somebody may have swapped out the tranny shifter.  I know there are several different ones for specific trannys.  I've got a R151F and it has a healthy dogleg to clear the forward shift t-case lever.  My brother in law had a 87 also, but carb'd and his shifter and t-case shifter layout were different than mine.

Best thing to do is call the Marlin in the morning (or when ever you can) and they should be able to get ya lined up.  And maybe have the right shifter laying around.

Give Marlin a call.  Those guys can get you straightened out over the phone in no time.  And possibly have what you need just laying around in the back lot!

Is it possible you have a t case shifter off a top shift and you have a forward shift case? I agree with the cheese that they had slight differences over the years with different bends.

Also cheese, i am interested in your dog leg. That makes allot of sense for the setup. I put a R151F in my runner and didn't get the 5speed shifter with it so i scrounged up parts to get a working setup.

I had to bend (heat up and twist) my setup allot to make it work.  To do this i used a simple butane torch with a vise. the upper black part of the shifter will melt off if you get the lower section your bending to hot. I was extremely careful and it was still too hot. So be prepared to glue it back on ( i think i just used some rtv to be honest). It took me 5 trys to get it to work perfect so trail and error is your best bet to perfecting it.
