My 1981 Trekker
« on: Aug 21, 2009, 10:32:17 AM »
I am new to this site, but I thought I would start a thread to show where i started and some of what I have done so far on my trcuk.  My original plan was just to drive it as is, but I have now decided to return it to 100% stock.  This is where it started:

I cleaned it up a bit with a power washer, rubbing compound and yellow Mcguires wax, removed the peeling stickers ect.

I put in the square headlight conversion and added a Smittybilt tube bumper, but decided against both options to go back to stock instead.

I currently have the interior dash pieces removed, uncluding the heater ducting for cleaning and repairs.

I also have removed the side windows to replace all of the gaskets.  Very hard to find the right pieces since the side windows are Winnebago propietory.  I am down to one missing gasket to find.

I looked at other window options like solid glass with a gasket only frame, but have since decided to stay with the original windows.
I am not doing much to it right now.  The gas tank is out for cleaning.  I have put together all othe pieces for the chrome kit: grill, bumper, headlight bezels, side vents, rims and hub cap center, as my truck was a deluxe version without the chrome package.  Restoring original hub centers, grill and fender logos is where I have been putting my time.  The gas tank is the next project, and then on to fiberglass repairs.  I am not sure if I am going to paint the truck yet.  Maybe just the back end.  TIme will tell. :D

Hey this is Paul for the bumper guard.  The guard is for the tan Trekker!

I forgot to mention that this is #1 of 3 that I have owned.  The first one looked like this:

I sold it, and then that guy sold it to another guy that rolled it 2-3 times.  Finally I bought what was left of it:

All that remains not is a couple of heater vents, glove box cover, and the original Winnebago dash serial # tag.
I have another one sitting in the driveway too.

It is going to be for sale.  I have too many other projects right now to deal with it.  It is in decent shape with original front and back seats, and side panels.  Some knuckle head removed the vacuum tubing on the carb and vacuum advance, so that is going to get fixed.  It runs, but needs the vacuum items replaced.  This will happen next week.

Here is a link to the only close to stock restoration done on a Trekker to date.  It is complete visually, but has an aftermarket carburetor and air cleaner, the shifter boot is painted tan, and the front seats are from a later year Toyota.  It is still the nicest Trekker restoration yet.  It was done for the owner of the Toyota dealer that sold the Trekkers.

I know a guy that had a '85 or '86 2wd version of this.  I know it isn't technically a trecker, but was wondering if anyone knew anyone about these.  He bought his from a dealer in the L.A. area with a walk-through and a rear seat and I think it may have had a body lift.  Does anyone have any info on these?

Not sure what the 85-86 version would have been except a modified 4Runner of some type.  There are pics out there of some interesting conversions.  The Trekker was only 81-83.

It definately was not a 4runner - it started off life as a 2wd truck and was a 5 lug.  It did have a the 4runner looking shell that was so popular though.

Do you have any pictures of this truck?  It's possible someone with some skill modified a 2WD truck to accommodate the 4Runner shell.  It could have been a dealer conversion too.  I would need to see what it looks like to have any real idea of what it could be.

No, I don't have a pic of it.  I wish I did, it sounds like a pretty rare conversion - I've never seen another like it.  He said they had a few more on the lot when he bought it too.

You must be the friend of Drew's that I talked to last year.  At least something remains of the red trekker.  Hey Tanner, do you know if Drew has any of the original 81 emission stuff left from the red trekker?  I have another trekker I need to get on the road and for sale.  PM me if he or you have the stuff.  Fo rthat matter anyone that has it PM me. :)

I got the 1981 fedreal emision parts and a hopefully good carb in the mail today for the black Trekker.  Going to try and get them installed this weekend.  I need to get it runnung properly to be able to sell it.  If I can't get it running correctly, it is either going to be a keeper or get parted.
I haven't done a thing to the tan Trekker this summer except collect more, redudant,  extra parts for it.  (yes that was redundant too) :gap:

If you can't get it to smog, what are you gonna be asking for it? I'm sure there are plenty of folks that would buy it that way.

I would rather sell it that way to be honest.  As it sits maybe 1600.00.  If I throw on the new carb then 1700.00.  I really have too many projects going right now, so I would like to see it gone sooner rather than later.
