transfer case leak
« on: Aug 11, 2009, 08:08:04 PM »
can anyone tell me why i have gear lube coming out of the shifter base on my transfer case? and its not in between the shifter base and the transfer case either, its where the shifter goes into the base. it is coming out of there almost faster than i can put it in. is there a breather on the transfer case that may be clogged?

Sounds like your missing the oil baffle.

Lip down.  (otherwise it will act like a dam)

I added a small hole in the rear corner with a punch too.  (punched down)

I was having the same problem. Adding the oil slinger didnt help much. I took the shifter off and re installed it with a lot of rtv after cleaning the surface. The leak is gone. Another problem I was having and still am is the case was/is heating up excessively. The shifter is hotter to the touch then the crawl box shifter.  :dunno:
While driving, After I let up on the gas peddle at higher speeds I hear a slight grinding noise that seems to be coming from the rear case. Could a bearing be going out or something? The case has 4.7 gears and they do work properly.

If the transmission is getting that hot, it's usually an exhaust leak that's doing it.  This will basically fry the oil in a few months.

Its the rear case, not the transmission. I had considered the exhaust being the being the culprit for over heating my case. I have recently redone my exhaust moving my cat which was nearly next to the transfer case, the cat is now further toward the rear of the body. The transfer case is still much hotter then the crawl box and tranny.

I just drained the transfer case oil on my new '80 and like 2 tablespoons came out...  I've been driving for like a month like that since I hauled it home.  It runs quiter now.  How the hell was it running like that without friction welding itself?!  Unbeleivable...
