Transfer Case Oil Leak
« on: Mar 06, 2008, 07:26:11 AM »
OK, quick question....  I want to make sure I didnt screw something up.  I installed a geared transfer case that I bought (85 4runner).  When it was installed I realized the flanges had the wrong bolt pattern for my driveshafts.  I had already filled the transfercase with oil.  When I took off the lower flange (front) oil started leaking out from that area at a fairly high rate of speed.

Im assuming this is because there is no gasket bewteen the flange and the splines, and I dont really have an issue, just install the new flange and refill the case with oil.  Is that correct?

Should have just re-drilled the flanges, and the reason it is leaking is because you took it off. Put the other one on and it should stop.

I had my old tcase and the correct flanges right there, so why redrill? When I reinstalled the flange the leak stopped.  I figured it was OK, I just had to hit the thing with an impact gun for a while, so I wanted to make sure I didnt do anything unusual.  Thanks for the reply.

I would have redrilled it only because I hate gear oil all over the place, I don't mind sweeping up metal shavings. Plus make sure to re-notch that center nut so that it doesn't back out.
