Thanks man..  although I wish I was as far along as yours is!

lilbuddy

is there any chance you have any parts off the old runner that you want to sell? I need new mirrors (power) and a new switch for the lock/unlcok button on the driver door...

Im stoked to see both our outcomes.

Did you ever figure out what wires to snip and solder together? i havent searched at all on it for the neutral safety.

I have lots of extra parts, but my parts vehicle is all manual windows and mirrors :(

My wiring is racking my brain right now being that Im switching from 3.0 to 22re and auto to manual..  I did happen to find a full detailed manual that I downloaded online with awesome wiring diagrams.. they are color too.. if you want, pm me your email and I will send it to you..

Halladay - those are my cousins, they are 33x12.5x15

Lilbuddy - The gray one is the one Im keeping and it does have power, but the red one is the parts one, and that stuff is all manual

chim

Update: A few more small things are done...  such as clutch slave cyl and line, mounted power steering res., mounted coil, swapped power steering lines, swapped throttle cables, brake vacuum line..
BEFORE:

then..

Now Im starting to get into some frustrating issues that are starting to get discouraging..
I dont think these two Runners could be more different... Im trying to put everything from the red 92 (22re, 5-speed.. everything on the runner is manual.. no power).. to the 95 Runner (3.0, Auto.. everything on runner is power).. and the wiring is driving me freakin batty!
Some issues are:
Alternator connections are different.. do I splice or pull more harness out and swap...
Coil connections are different.. do I splice or pull more harness out and swap..
Plugs off of engine back fuse block look different.. again.. splice or what...
(if I have to pull harness this will be a pain since these harnesses run through the fenders.. and I dont want to have to get rid of any power options.. )
Speedos are different..  weird enough the 95 loaded runner has a cable driven speedo that went to auto...
and the 92 has an electric speedo that went to manual.. .and I want to run the 92 because it has lower miles and the miles match the engine.. here are the two speedos...
1992 - electric speedo

1995 - cable speedo

Then.. can I unhook this rear abs box without any electrical issues and no dash warning light?

If anyone has done this swap feel free to offer some helpful advice!  :yesnod:

on my 93 alt i just changed the plug on the back of the alt prety simple but this was a 4cyl 90 to 93 4cyl. the v6 have a diff alt at least the cases r diff.

chim

Thats an idea.. I actually have both alternators.. the v6 one and the 4cyl one... I wonder if I can just run the v6 one? I guess I will have to wait till I can check the mounts out and see if they are similar.. or does anyone know off the top of their heads, and will there be any charging or electrical issues from this?

lilbuddy

Just do an entire wiring harness swap.... and then for the speedo use the electronic speedo sending unit in the case and it will put the pulse for the electric gauge.

Yeah, pain in the ass, but i htink its worth it. No hassles of anything later down the road of wires coming undone or anything  :twocents:

So I sold my 85 4Runner back in late 2007... This was the build... http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=14309.0

Pics...

I really miss my runner and have had several non-toyota vehicles in the last two years..  honda, vw's, chevy. and never really happy.. so hopefully I can stick with this project and keep it for a while.. I learned a lot building my 85, and know exactly what I want for my new 92..
So here is what Im starting with... These are the two pics that were on the craigslist ad...

It is pretty hammered.. but.. here is the good part.. it was only $800.. and it has lots of decent parts.. to start off with.. this runner came from the factory with a V6 and an auto trans... the original owner paid to have the dealership put in a 22re and 5 speed at 100k... now the runner has 166k.. the seller was asking $1500, But when I called to come look at it he said it started blowing white smoke and that the head gasket was bad... Im not too worried about it because I bought my 85 with a bad head gasket and fixed it and it ran like a champ.. Good thing about this 92 is that it still fires up and runs smooth.. so I believe with just a new gasket it will be great... So i just towed it today to my uncles where it will start getting torn apart next weekend..

First thing I will do is start tearing it down to get the body off.. then I will clean up the chassis..  fix the motor up.. and start looking for a donor body...
More pics to come next weekend..  This wont be an amazing fast build as i want to try and build this one without going into debt! So first priority is getting it running good and reliable and the mods with start coming afterwards  :yesnod:

That duck tape was my idea that has got to add like 10 ponies lol

Update: Good news, I sold more parts.. sold the G58...
Bad news..  these harnesses are ridiculous.. and Im seriously contemplating selling both runners together and buying something that already has a 22re...

nothing hookin up? or whats the problems?

chim

Its not a problem of hooking up.. well kinda I guess... pulling harnesses and swapping is the recommended way to go by several people.. yet that is an insane amount of work.. I started pulling the harness in the red 92 ( which i believe was always a 22re and never a 6 cyl like I was told).. and there is just so much involved that the time its going to take to swap it and get it figured out, then on top of trying to get all the other things spliced in such as windows, locks, mirrors.. then tranny and speedo stuff.. too much time will be involved.. I would rather be spending time modding something thats already running with no electrical issues.. and focus on the goods... I want to be wheeling next summer... not trouble shooting..

I got those headlights workin:) I just ended up taking the plug out and but connecting the two wires together.. I know its not the best idea but oh well it works and its still fused and everything so what ever lol. Wiring is a pain man. And honestly I could see it always being a re but he told us that it was a v6 swapped. The wiring honestly in the end is so nice though if you do the work. I helped grenadedtoy do his hilux and once you know whats there its so simple if something doesnt work.
89 extra cab stock on 1 tons.
83 rolled with built toy axles
92 2wd DD
first gen cab

Check out the build.

chim

Im glad you go those lights working!
I think I need to keep searching online to try and find someone who did the swap with pics.. on here and on pirate people talk about it, but there is no pics.. and no definite info... I dont want to give up on it.. but I also dont want to be working on it for another two years... Im still collecting parts though..  picking up a w56 today with a top shift t-case.. i would really prefer a forward shift w56 but one hasnt surfaced yet thats decent..

Straight_Axle_Swap_86

looks like a good project. i am from oregon city let me know if u wanna wheel sometime, i know the trails at goat pretty well.

chim

Yeah I'm looking to get rid of these and start off fresh with a running and driving 1st gen runner or 4cyl 2nd gen runner... The wiring issues are just not worth my time....  not to mention a huge source of frustration

crawlerdad

Aw come on you can't give up now! Nothing worth having is easily had. At least that's what I keep telling myself so I keep working on my project.

chim

I would love to make this work..  but its ridiculous how much work it is, especially when I don't really know what I'm doing.. I can handle pretty much everything else.. this is just a stupid amount of work.. especially with no garage!

crawlerdad

I have a one car garage full of tools and crap, I work in the dirt next to it. It sucks, my jack stands are on stepping stones. I finally put some old carpet down so when I drop tools or bolts I don't have to dig for them. I was going to pour a slab to work on but I spent the money on a locker.

chim

You still got it better than I do :) I live in an apartment and my runners are a 25-30 minute drive away from me :(

crawlerdad

Yah that has to suck, I just run out back and start to wrench. Good luck with it, hope it works out for ya.

Just an update... I sold both runners this last weekend... now I am sitting on a pile of parts....
85 front axle, 22RE, W56, 2 top shift transfer case, 1 forward shift transfer case, front range clocked crossmember and skid, 36" swampers, 2" wheel spacers.....

I'm either going to hold out till I find a good 4Runner donor... either 1st gen or 2nd gen already setup for 22re 5-speed... If I cant find anything in a reasonable amount of time on the cheap I think I will just start selling parts.
