Which brake upgrade?
« on: Jun 23, 2009, 04:33:17 PM »
So my braking really sucks now and i'm deciding to upgrade my front brakes but to clarify my confusion, I was thinking about using the v6 ifs calipers/vented rotors but some people said that it better to do with land cruiser brake calipers. so my question is which is better and if it's the land cruiser's, which years do i use?

84, when i brake i have to put alot of pressure and brake far into a stop. might be my master cylinder too but i would rather upgrade the brake system because i was never able to stop on a steep incline, always rolling back.

i just used ifs calipers and lc rotors....but the biggest difference in my brakes came from the upgrade of the master cylinder AND the bigger booster, both of which i got out of a v6 pickup...this helped my brakes immensely!!! I would highly recommend not just doing the master only, but do both!!

You either misunderstood them or they misinformed you.  It's ifs calipers with landcruiser rotors, and you'll want to upgrade to a 1" master cylinder at the same time.

......and the booster......my results with just adding the master cylinder were a rock hard pedal and little brake pressure...once I added the booster, all the parts came together and it was like magic!!! I had crappy brakes that wouldnt stop the truck at all to having a good feeling pedal and being able to lock up my 35's..This is just my experience with it though, I guess some have had success with just the master...I would go to a junkyard and get the booster from a v6 truck....I am cheap, I got it all from the same truck and bolted it to mine..

86 and up, yes, do the booster too.  Mine is a 1st gen, so booster stays

I have the big v6 calipers and 1in mc and my pedal requires some strength to lock em up. Is there a way we first gen guys can fit a bigger booster in there? or do we just have to man up and deal with it.

I'm running the V6 calipers on mine with the larger bore master cylinder.  Seems to stop my 40's OK.  The V6 calipers make the stock brakes look tiny  :haha:

I did the brake upgrade.  Check out my build thread.  http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=39009.0
I think it is on pages 8,9 & 10...

Used Landcruiser Vented rotors with IFS V6 calipers.  Stops much better now.  I was going to add a 1" bore master cylinder and bigger booster, but I haven't done it yet because it stops great now with the bigger rotors and calipers.

So another question is can i use a brake booster from a 4 cyl or does it have to be from a v6? there's a guy selling his for pretty cheap off of a 92 and i think it's a 4cyl.

Brakes is a thing that I would go with new parts.  This is a kinda important area to not skimp on.
