ok. so i have my newly aquired 84 4Runner. going from my little 86 2wd street pounder with serious stopping ability to the 4runner has seriously made me question how well the brakes are working on this.

ive noticed the brake peddal to be SUPER stiff but takes a large amount of effort to stop the truck regardless of how firm the pedal feels. so im thinking the booster may be toast. while there, i want to upgrade the rotors to vented, and the calipers over from a v6 IFS pickup. my questions are however if the 4Runner V6 calipers will work as well? also, will the vented rotors off the v6 pickups and 4Runners work? what years and what models do i have to hunt down to get these parts or what parts work for what im looking to do? also, since i think ill be replacing the booster, what year make and model trucks came with the bigger master cylinders?? thanks

what year model rotors? -

what year model calipers? -

what year model brake master cylinder? -

Any caliper from a V6 will work, rotors are 91-97 non abs fj80 and for a master a 1" from a V6 rig will work well.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

Or there's this option  http://frontrangeoffroadfab.com/nfoscomm/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=136&osCsid=31e739132e7c6998ce51f1869f23c9db

Seems legit to me, but I'd think the tundra rotors would be bigger yet and a better option.

the tacoma brake upgrade sounds interesting........ 100 bucks for two plates and some bolts seems kinda steep tho..... tundra calipers and rotors though would make this puppy stop in a heartbeat tho............. hmm...

With my brake setup and factory 94 rear drums I could lock up 38" sx's on dry pavement at 3psi...

are you daily driven?   cause if not what do you need that much braking power for?

a rear disk set up will help a little to.

Actually if dry and adjusted a drum will out stop a disc any day.  The problem is their brake fade is quicker due to lack of cooling like a disc has.  And of course they suck when wet..

Will I be swapping my 4 wheel discs off the truck in place for drums?  Nope, they are delicious overkill that will stop quite literally on a dime.  My brakes are ridiculous.

i did the tacoma brake swap for free.  I used IFS hubs that I cut the flanges off around the wheel studs.  Used IFS brake calipers off of a 4 cyl I had to widen them a bit at the top and bottom.  I then placed them on the outside of the original caliper mounts with an 1/16" spacer.  Used the factory bolts just threaded them in from the outside in.  Kind of a pain to get them started.  I know it sounds dodgy but I've stood on my brakes going down a hill and skidded the tires to make sure nothing would break in a panic situation.  I ordered 97 4x4 Tacoma brake rotors at the parts store.  If that is too confusing I can get some pictures maybe...

yea................... im trying to follow exactly where/how you mounted it all but its a touch confusing. pictures always help

Make your IFS hub look just like that one.  You'll have to test fit it a couple of times by seeing if it'll slip into the taco rotor.  Notice how you SA calipers are mounted they're bolted on from the inboard side out towards the wheel mounting surface.  When you mount your IFS calipers youl first put on the rotor, then put the 2 caliper mounting bolts through the caliper so they tighten from the outside towards the engine with a 1/16" spacer (I used a good quality washer that fit the caliper bolt snug which also fit perfect to the caliper.  The bolt head will be on the brake pad side now. They'll be between the rotor and the bolt holes in the knuckle.  They're a real booger to start and I'd recommend cleaning up the bolt holes in the knuckle with a tap or an old caliper bolt first.  Then just mount it up might have to do some fine tuning with different size spacers or widening the caliper.  Clear as mud right?

the fror taco swap parts use a bigger caliper too, putting the taco rotor on with a 86-95ifs caliper works the same as using the fj rotor/ifs calipers, and my ifs caliper and ifs rotor swap setup.
the point of the full taco setup is to use a larger caliper and rotor for even more stopping power.

i will have a few sets of the fror taco brackets on my rigs in a few weeks.

and i also have rear disc brake brackets that use sfa calipers/rotors, or taco rotors/ifs calipers.

ohh... and some of the t-100 used a 1 1/16 master cyl.  im trying to find a used one currently

I have $40 total in my front brake upgrade.  The only thing I bought was taco rotors, brake clean and some brake fluid.  Everything else I had.  If I would've had V6 calipers I would've used them but I didn't.  I was mainly wanting to get the 3" wider stance for when I put my IFS rear in.  For $40 you can't buy 1.5" spacers so for me this was the most economical choice.  I also chose the taco rotors swap because they're "drop off" unlike the FJ vented rotor swap.
