The Ghost - '86 Xtracab Build
« on: May 20, 2009, 09:38:02 AM »
Here is a link to my first build and where most of the parts are coming from for this build

http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=14183.0

I just picked up an '86 Xtracab Turbo truck without a motor, but it has an R151F and 23 Spline T-case.  The truck had a body lift, but I pulled that out this weekend and cleaned it to get it ready for the motor.  I will hopefully be able to pick up a motor within the next week or so.

Here are a few pics from before I picked it up.

some plans for the build include

-SAS w/ my old '85 axle, 5.29's, Aussie Locker, Long Hub Gears
-Swap my old rear end in 5.29's, Detroit Soft Locker, All Pro Chromoly Shafts
-Marlin Highsteer
-RUF/ Marlin 4in. Rear Springs w/ Frenched Hangers
-R151F, 23 spline Duals
-Flatbelly
-Bob/Dovetailed Bed
-Partial Exo/ Bed Cage
-40in. Iroks (hopefully)

the new toy that will help with the project

definitely  :beerchug:

I also found a motor for it from TOYJOETA on here.  He is getting ready to swap a different motor into his truck and a mutual friend put us in touch.  The motor is a 22RE with an LC engineering street performer head, TRD stage 2 cam, ARP head studs, metal backed timing chain guides, Jet hot coated Doug Thorley Header, MSD ignition, and a Centerforce 30# flywheel and Dual friction clutch!  I am gonna pick it up from him in a couple weeks and hopefully get the truck running shortly after.  I am really excited to see how this motor is gonna do compared to my old tired 22R.

That's it for now.  Probably won't have anymore updates until I pick up the motor.

It just has a voltmeter, oil pressure, and inclinometer on it, but if ya still want it $20 and i'll just bring it with me when I pick up TOYJOETA's motor.

some tube ideas i just drew out. It is a partial exo so there is tube running inside of those fenders.  I am also going to run another X on the down bars of the bedcage it just looked really confusing with them drawn in there.  I don't really care about denting the bed i just dont want it to collapse so I am planning on running those hoops inside the bedrails.  They will tie down into the slider in the front and down into the rear bumper in the back.  Any other thoughts/input would great

I looked, my tach is in the way.  Thanks though!

Tube work plans look good!  That's the way I'd run an exo cage for sure!

No problem.

Now I just need to make sure the tube work comes out like I planned.

Your really lucky we are building my cage first. I'm sure we will know a lot more about bending after mine. You know we should just split cost on all the tube we waste on mine  :gap: :ha_ha:

Anyways. I like what you have drawn up. I'm going to go for almost the same thing

Matt how much of the wiring is left on your truck?  I have all the wiring from the ecu to the engine, but I don't know how much of the wiring I'm gonna need that goes down the driver side to the fuse box in the cab. I've bout got the engine ready to pull.  Aaron and I brought his dad's engine hoist over to my mom's tonight all i need to do is unbolt the tranny and motor mounts and she should be out.  We have to bring the baby to her first check up so hopefully I can work on it tomorrow night.

made a little progress this week.  picked up the motor, dropped it in the truck.  I am doing the head gasket and some other little things before getting it running, but it shouldn't be too long.  :crossed:     Thanks for letting me use the garage Jared!  :beerchug:

getting ready to drop

maneuvering it in

new home!

tearing down

i know you are probably all thinking why not do the work with the motor out of the truck.  we just rented the hoist for a day (to save $$ for us poor college kids) pulled one motor to put onto an engine stand for work and dropped mine in so it was at least sitting there and we wouldnt need the hoist.  more updates next week!
